  • Arson at Montreal's & Canada's Only SRS/GRS Clinic

An arson fire at Montreal's and Canada's ONLY SRS/GRS Clinic being investigated as a hate crime. Bad news for Canada's transgender community already on long waiting list for Canada's only Medicare approved clinic.

That sucks, the need for someone to go out of their way to do something like this.
It amazes me anyone cares that much to go to such effort.
I guess I can see the hostility towards a place that cuts off penises.

However I have never been in favour of the hate crime designation, it is way over used and bastardized by many.
To me almost all crime is a hate crime, except perhaps involuntary manslaughter and cheating on your taxes.
In most case the hate crime penalty is the same as whatever crime was committed.
Calling everything a hate crime just muddle the whole thing.
If they are an arsonist, well they should go to jail for that.
They still get sentenced based intent and degree of hostility.

I hope they catch the bastards. Maybe the government will send everyone to Thailand now.

It is just a test of character to the members of the group. Since the clinic experience this damage then we can expect that they will find an alternative one for their option.

I agree doesn't matter to me how it gets prosecuted as long as it does when they catch the person. It should definitely serve to point out to the federal government how having only one clinic to serve the transgender community in Canada is ludicrous. And I also agree that if the person has their HRT, name changes, and psych referrals in place the provincial governments should cover up to the equivalent cost of going to Dr. Brassard's clinic to go to any reputable SRS/GRS clinic and surgeon in the world.

My sources tell me the arsonist was not a TS hating bastard, she was a Ts who had had surgery and left with unmet expectations.

A legal case needs 3 things to charge a person. They are means, motive and opportunity. Without motive, no crime can be charged. If the motive is hate, why is it not charged? Even if the hate crime penalty is the same as the crime, it would be added as a second or third charge possibly doubling or tripling the sentence. Arson carries a max 5 years sentence. If the motive was hate and was proved, another 2 years would be added to the sentence. 7 years instead of 5.

Multiple Charges are common in a criminal case, it allows the prosecutor room to maneuver when working out a plea deal. For example, in this case the lawyer may ask for a plea of guilty on the Hate Crime(lesser sentence) in exchange for dropping the arson charge. This may even result in a reduced sentence for the hate crime.

At least it wasn't a hate crime, but it's still pretty sad, since it seems like the arsonist had a botched operation there.
Heck, who wouldn't want to burn the place down after something like that?

I suspected as much.. it was the first thing that came to mind actually..

                  I'm glad this wasn't a hate crime..

But this does highlight how unstable some trans people are..

Sometimes I wonder about the screening process by doctors and psychologists to determine if someone should undergo SRS..

After all the worst trans haters are trans..

                    Info on Brassard

Hope this place is up and running smoothly soon.

On another note, my roommate, Casey, is hoping to book a consultation with Dr. Brassard this summer. We have been checking the website and they want me to accompany them to Montreal. Casey does not speak French and is unfamiliar with Montreal. I can speak French half decently but only visited Montreal a couple of times years ago. Casey can get OHIP (Ontario health care) to cover most of the expenses, mostly chest masculinization and follow ups.

                    (1) we planning to take a bus or train, so is the clinic nearby?
                    (2) are there motels near the clinic?
                    (3) might turn this into a mini-vacation as well, any good cheesecake places? :-)

Please feel free to PM me with any answers.

Thanks for the info. Don't know when it will happen. They need a consultation 6 months before surgery, but I heard there is quite a waiting list for this guy.

Seeing Dr. Brassard's clinic is the only SRS clinic in Canada and only place that medicare and health coverage in Canada will pay for and/or reimburse a trans woman for SRS in Canada this isn't surprising.

I heard there is a 2 yr waiting list once you have the consultation and approved. Then when you get there you are on his assembly line of 4-5 SRS surgeries per day, which is ridiculous! No wonder he botches so many!

I think he is highly regarded within the trans community not because of his stellar results but because people assume most SRS surgeries done equals best surgeon or results. I follow Princess Joules aka Julie Vu on YouTube and she had her SRS at Dr. Brassard's clinic in April 2014 and I was not impressed by a lot of what she went through or the very evident scarring that she still has from it.
