    which was
posted by another member where i think the direction in Jane's thread slightly changed, sort of.

So, instead of hijacking Jane's thread, i thought to create a new thread, to say the following:

Before anyone goes beating themselves down in self guilt over being too overweight or too out of shape (for whatever reason), at least, learn where you stand "in" the matter.

What is your Body Mass Index (BMI)?

Click the link, below, to be brought to a BMI calculator.
    http://www.mhp.gov.on.ca/en/active-l.../tools/bmi.asp
Scroll down a bit and enter your height and weight and press "calculate" and then post what your BMI is. if you dare.
Actually, many of you guys are already daring to admit to being old and too fat or out of shape, and to that i say, "No! No! No! Don't do THAT, please."
    Just post your BMI.
The BMI is misleading if the person is a body builder so if you're a person with LOTS of bulging muscle, say so.

    I'll go first.
These days, i fluctuate between 138 and 140 pounds. And i hate this because last summer (2013), i weighed 132 pounds for many, many, many months.
But due to a few new recurring and pesky injuries, i can't be as physically active (sporty, like, wall-tennis, swimming laps, aerobic dance, long distance cycling, jogging) as i am used to being, and since then, i've gained about 6-9 lbs while trying to recover from hurt tendons.

I am 5 feet 6 and a half inches tall and i currently weigh (a hated) 139 pounds.
In this BMI calculator, i can't enter the half inch in height, so i entered 5'7" tall and 139 pounds.

    My BMI is 21.8.

    What is your BMI?

    -----------------------------------------
    BMI Weight Status
    Below 18.5 ............Underweight

    18.5 ? 24.9............Normal

    25.0 ? 29.9...........Overweight

    30.0 and Above...Obese
    ------------------------------------------

    Be honest.

    Added on Dec 10, 2013
Oh, by the way, the BMI calculator is designed for people aged between 20 and 65 years.
It does not apply to babies, adolescents, pregnant or nursing women, senior citizens, very muscular people or endurance athletes.

I scored 24.4 and I am not where near over-weight.

    I am 6'3" 200 lbs.
If I worked out more I could be 225 lbs but have less fat.
Then I would score 28 but I would not be fat at all.

        My bad.
I added this part, in red, later on Dec 10 2013, to say that my Special K chart say it's in the bottom end of the "caution zone" (between the ideal and overweight zone).

          Bmi

I'm 5'9" and 175. Getting up in years so softening up a bit but mostly solid and some pretty decent upper body muscle, flat stomach. According to BMI my optimal weight is 148 lbs. I weighed that when I was 15! I believe my BMI is about 26 which makes me overweight however, I feel great.

            Sorry, sweety.
            You are on the boarder.
You must have entered something wrong because 6'3" and 200 pounds has a BMI of 25, not 24,4.

              Watch out holiday season

Well.... 5'8" 177 lbs 26.9 on the ol Richter scale. This scale is crap, I'll use an example. I need a 44 suit which means a 44 inch chest right? However, the standard drop should mean I would have a 38 inch waist. Mine is 33. 5 inches have to be taken in on my pants which distorts them beyond all recognition. Which is why I have to resort to sport coats and a separate pair of pants that actually fit. Nice that this BMI has me border lining obese! I think I'll go eat a pound cake now

                Put THAT down.

You are not bordering with obese. It says you are in the overweight zone. Try the BMI again and add some extra pounds to your weight to see how heavy you will have to be to actually be obese.

Let me consult the ancient Special K chart for you.

The ideal zone for a person 5'8" is between about 132 pounds and which borders with underweight, and about 177 pounds which borders with overweight. You still have a many more cakes to eat before you are obese.

Besides, if any one is on the border line with obese, it doesn't mean they are morbidly obese. Morbidly obese is way way up there far away from the ideal zone.

Instead of that cake, try this instead:

                For breakfast:

                For lunch:

                For supper:
Stuff your face with salad having dark leafy greens, carrots, and crunchie veggies, and a few bowls of veggie soup, with some quinoa.

                    A better BMI calculator

                    http://www.webmd.com/diet/calc-bmi-plus

The usual BMI index is just a number that only suggests the relative shape of your body but this new calculator allows you to calculate what that number means about the actual health of your body!

Hey Rider! {I had the same problem when younger, 42 chest/34 waist so suits then always came w/36 pant} Now though I'm up to 37 waist but my current BMI = 22.9

BMI is a number that is useful only as a rough guide to the relative shape or thickness of the body but on its own that number means very, very little. Most importantly, there is no agreement internationally or even medically on exactly what BMI number actually signifies obesity! Different localities, countries etc. all use different numbers

Many things have to be considered in calculating and using the BMI such as age, nationality, activity level, etc., and way more, and as Crag, points out, even distribution of muscle and body fat in athletic persons which screws up the numbers so as to make them show as obese!

There's always hope, I'll probably reach that ideal weight of 132 when I'm in my 80's, impotent, and can't remember my name Toban's chart still put me at the same number but at least the word healthy was included. I should feel pretty good or my scale is broken(I like those ones) because somehow I've managed to have lost 10 pounds in the last week. Not uncommon for me because it's nothing for me to fluctuate 5 pounds in a day, depending on the day. If this thread had been posted then, I would have been at 28.6 which is only 1.4 off the obese mark. OK I'll lay off Timmies and eat rice crackers over the holidays. Don't want to be rejected service now

Thanks for cheering me up, back when I was younger I had 4% body fat, it's tough to know where you were and where you are. I wish I had more time to be where I was
