Driving this morning in a neighborhood where my dad went to school. Remembered a sad story about 2 teachers in his classroom (Catholic Brotherhood) opening a 3rd floor window and balancing a 6th grader by the ankles from a 3rd floor window. My experience during 4 years with those guys while not as drastic can never be forgotten.
Was called up in front of the class by our 8th grade Latin teacher for continuously yawning and at same time disturbing a couple of other boys. He suggested to me that I go out I the hallway for 5 minutes, knock on the door, stand by his desk and ask for a gifle (French word for a smack). I knew what that was, but terrified I did as instructed. He then proceeded to talk to me like my best friend asking questions about my favorite sport baseball, other classes....This went on for a while until he saw I was concentrating on my answer and WHACK, right across the face. Backed up a step, never reacted and back to my desk I went. Class resumed as if nothing ever happened.
Got home, never said a word about it to family cause my dad would have probably "smacked" me again for disturbing classroom. Never yawned again in "this" class.
Other times, other ways and we survived.
