Pffft. I used to dream of 14400. Used to have a 9600 baud modem (386/16 Mhz) to log on my local university Unix system. No pictures, just text based. We've come a long way baby.

It was probably a 2400/9600 baud modem.
That i what i used for University and Bulletin board services.
The 9600 baud only worked for faxing.
I originally started with a 1200 baud modem.

14400 modem was the minimum for having home dial in internet service.
This modem still used 9600 for faxing.

I had 286 with 640k ram but it could not run a 14400 modem nor connect to the internet.
I then got a 386 with 2mb of ram and then paid $900 for 2mb more ram.

The text based was the LYNX browser which still exists today on command line Linux and Unix.

You still can send pictures through the text based browser, it just shows up as text and needs to be decoded.

Actually that is exactly what happened on the BBS services, they were also text based.
You had to download the picture as a text file picture.txt
Then you had to have a decoding program on your computer to turn it into a picture file.

Same with the news groups.
You had to convert you pictures to text to upload them.

The very first browser I used was the text based Lynx browser on Unix.
The first GUI browser I used was the Mosaic Browser at University on the 386s with Windows 3.0
Netscape 1.2 became the standard for a number of years until Netscape 4.
Then when Microsoft included Internet Explorer in Windows it became king for a while.

When i first got an internet connection at home you had to have at least a 14400 baud modem which was fairly fast.
Probably took 10-15 minutes for a normal sized picture.
