  • Seeking trans sex workers for focus group

Hey everyone, it's been a while since I've posted here, I've had a lot of other things on my plate. As many of you know, I've stepped back from trans activism in recent years, preferring to focus on sex work activism instead. After I finished my most recent degree, I was asked to get involved in a nation-wide study, specifically designed to give sex workers their own voice. I'm organizing a number of Toronto-based focus groups, while other activists are doing the same thing in other parts of Canada.

So, I'm taking a sabbatical for the rest of 2011 to work on this research project, but when I was approached to take part, one of the conditions of my participation was the inclusion of a trans-specific focus group, in addition to the other groups requested by the researchers. As of now, Toronto is the only city with a trans-specific discussion group, so it's vital that we try our best to participate.

Details are still being arranged, but it looks like the focus group will be small, most likely on a Saturday afternoon in October or November, and will last approximately two hours. Food and refreshments will be provided, as well as a small honourarium for your participation. Ethical guidelines will be strictly adhered to, and I will provide copies of the research methods to anyone who wishes to read them.

Confidentiality and discretion are absolultely assured, and this is a rare chance for us to talk about our needs in the industry, the problems and challenges we face, and most importantly, how we can make things better. We'll be presenting the results of our study at a national conference in June 2012, and it's imperative that we make our voices heard. Trans people are so often excluded from sex work-related debates, even though we're over-represented in the industry, and face unique challenges that other sex workers don't face - we won't be ignored any longer!

Space in our focus group is limited, and we may not be able to accommodate all who are interested in participating. However, please email me at [email protected] if you'd like to hear more details, and I'll do my best to get back to you right away. Thanks for your interest, and I hope to hear from many of you soon!

Interesting... five days up, 58 reads, not a single response.

Did I post this in the wrong section, or are things really this bad around here?

      That is really interesting

If I was in Toronto, I would support you. This sounds like a very interesting and useful project. I hope it is a big success.

              Nikki,

              Just a quick question:
Whether or not it should be a focus group?
I'm sure lots of tgirls will participate if it is a phone conference for instance

Thanks for the responses everyone, I appreciate it. Let me just clarify a couple of details here:

This study is a nation-wide survey that has been broken down by region/city, and participants are expected to be generally based in Toronto. This doesn't exclude those of us who travel frequently, but it is meant to examine regional differences, as well as work-related differences. We're speaking to on-street workers, off-street workers, dancers, and First Nations/migrant workers in five different cities, and we hope to compare the comments between groups across the country.

That being said, the only trans sex worker focus group is the one I requested (I told them I wouldn't participate without it), so perhaps I'll ask them if we can include workers from other parts of the country. Unfortunately, a phone conference doesn't seem viable, because it's hard to make sure everyone gets a chance to contribute; in a small group, it's a lot easier to pick up on non-verbal cues and make sure everyone gets a say.

Some of you might remember a couple of years ago, when I tried to do this through U of T and I was rebuffed by the Ethics Review Board (bunch of stuffy old white dudes who are too repressed for their own good... sorry, but they are!) so when this opportunity presented itself, I was very keen to make sure the study was broadened to include trans people as well. This is one of only a very few studies that will specifically include our interests, and it's a really good way to have our voices heard. Trans people are vastly over-represented in the sex trade, but painfully under-represented in studies of the sex trade; this is something we need to change, but we can't do it without your help.

We would like to invite all trans-identified people who are involved in any niche of the industry (escorting, webcam, porn, etc) and also, at any stage of transition, to ensure that we represent a wide range of interests and concerns.

The actual focus group will last for about two hours, and will take place at an easy-to-access and private location, and discretion and privacy are assured. As mentioned, a small donation will be provided to all participants, as well as food and refreshments.

Tia, Lynn, and anyone else who might be interested, please email me at my [email protected] address and we'll work out the details. The date for the discussion hasn't been carved in stone, and we can try to be flexible with people's travel schedules. Even if you're not sure you want to take part, but want more details about it, feel free to ask.

                    Focus Group - Wednesday, December 14, 5:30-7:30pm

Hey everyone, sorry I let this post slip off the radar, but we've finalized all the details of the focus group. We'll be meeting for two hours on Wednesday, December 14th, from 5:30-7:30pm. Food and drinks will be provided, and there is a $25 Honourarium for all participants (I know it's not much, but at least it's something).

We are hoping to have at least eight participants in this group. Your anonymity will be guaranteed, and the questions for the focus group have been approved by the UBC Ethics Review Board. Some of the questions will be specific to our experiences as trans sex workers, while other questions will ask about our involvement in the sex industry in general, but I can assure you that all of the questions will show us proper respect and recognition as the people we know ourselves to be. This is the only trans-specific focus group in Canada for this particular study. Because trans sex workers have historically been excluded from discussions on sex work, I insisted on the inclusion of our group to ensure our voices are heard.

This research study is absolutely critical, because it's Canada-wide, and will eventually be considered by any government seeking to regulate or restrict the sex industry. Due to a large over-representation of trans people in the sex trade, our contributions will be extremely valuable to not only sex workers, but the trans community in general, and the fact that the primary researchers are willing to include our voices is a huge improvement over how things have been in the past - we deserve the chance to share our stories, and not be ignored or erased any longer.

If you would like to take part, please email me at [email protected] and I'll put you on the list of attendees. Thanks so much for your support!

I'm afraid this post is for trans sex workers to join in a focus group, so we don't need any models at this time - we're happy to have webcam models and people working in other niches of the industry, so if that's what you meant, please send me an email if you'd like to participate.

Thanks for the support Bawb, we have a few people who have already signed up but we can still welcome a few more. Anyone who's interested, please email me and we'll send you all the details.

                          Cheers,
