I recall Y2K also. Big dramatic lead up to 31 December 1999. People buying survival kits, covering the inside of their windows with plastic, buying food like it was the end of the world, all IT was going to crash.
Then the clock struck 0001, 1 January 2000 and nothing bad that was predicted to happen, happened. The 21st century came in like any other year, decade or century.
Much ado about nothing, to quote Shakespeare.

Did the computers crash when it hit 2022 because computers thought the 0 was nothing therefore thought it was year 222, OR did they crash because computers only think in 01's and not 02's?(ahaha).(notice theres no longer a 1 in 2022--not funny?). Probably computers will shut down for a decade when they hit 2222.(no 1's at all and no computers think in 2's only).

Governments (and companies) started to store their data on mainframe computers in the late 60s early 70s. At the time disk space was incredibly expensive. You're talking about millions of dollars for the amount of space a portable hard drive now cost only a few dollars. In order to save space, dates were only stored as 2 digits, after all the computers would never be around 30 years later. Well, of course they were. So that meant that any date stored as say 78 would be way in the future after 2000. So to fix the problem, if you could, you would convert the databases to expand the date field to 4 digits. But some systems could not have the date fields expanded due to hoe they were stored, so you had to insert a subroutine to cycle through the date field to derive the correct date using the 28 year system. This meant that almost any program that used dates had to be converted.
