  • Toronto's 5 Prettiest!

Toronto's 5 prettiest...I'd like to know what purpose this pageant or pageants in general serves? Having this so called beauty pageant only creates ANIMOSITY within the community, the 'title' alone brings the community 10 steps back, considering what they have been fighting for. How does one measure beauty? Is it measured by how much surgery the contestants have had? Is beauty measured by technology and science? How about Inner Beauty, does that even count anymore?
The 5 Prettiest...is being the fifth means that the person is less prettier than the preceeding? How about the 'Smartest'? Does she even have a place in this ludicrous pageant? I can't fathom to think what the purpose of this would be to the contestants, I think it's so sad, that the community have to resort to this form of presentations....How about the ones whom does not place in the so called 5 Prettiest...how does that person would feel/ how would she feel towards the chosen ones? And to the chosen 5, would they feel superior to the ones that are not picked? Is being 1 of the 5 Prettiest makes her more 'expensive'? Would she be pretty only for a year, pretty only 'till her reign is up? What then, what would she be worth then when her prettiness is up?...I really do feel that to be worth something, one must look into her own self, and accept herself for who she is, for only then others can accept her...in this community, beauty is blurred by VANITY, (to whom many of these so called beauties are of christian, if not catholic origins, and in their catholic cathecism...VANITY, is 1 of the 7 deadly sins! Do not get me wrong, religion has got nothing to do with this.) Perhaps this pageant should be called Toronto's 5 Vainest Beautis!
In any case, I do wish the contestants much luck on this pageant, I sincerely hope that they would find beauty within themselves, beauty is not to be judged! For how can one measure beauty?

wow! i'm not sure what got anonymous on that rant but i hope he (or she or he-she) feels better for it. everyone has there own way of looking at things but why is it that some people are so positive that there way is the ONLY way that is right? i don't pretend to understand the entire workings of the civilized world but let me try and put a slightly different spin on this beauty pageant thing. it is more like a kids hockey tournament, the winner is usually the one having the best day. she might be the prettiest in a swimsuit, second in the gown competition, and third in something else but overall, on that day some panel of judges will decide she is the best. they might be right, or they could be wrong...but for that day that's what happens. people who make pagaents seem like something evil representing the bad side of society don't need to attend... it's that simple. to hear from people who try and find flaws in what should be a fun event makes me wonder if the next step from them is to shut something like this forum down because people argue in here and when they do it makes it harder on the t.s. community...please give me a break!!!

this person has got a point,....uummm just don't know if a lot of these members will agree. You do have some good points there in what you stated that is too superficial, but hey thisdid not just happened like now. Beauty Pageants are well known around the world and is celebrated annually ,up to thid day and age .It is like a tradition. Well shallow as it may sound like ,girls will have to be beautiful, so what each girl that will want to join does have the enough confidence and trust in themselves that the can make it ,,,and if not I do know that they were trained to accept the truth if she fails to win. This i think is only a thing organized to bring something , such as an event like this, togive enjoyment to the audience and whoever gets chosen . they should accept that and respect the decision of the panel. I still will see it no matter what. Several girl competing or should i say a few , I 've met....More Power!

        Re:Toronto's 5 Prettiest!

Fellow admirers...as I was expecting, my post was misread n misunderstood buy some...mine was merely an expression of an opinion, not a rant mind u. But if to subject this girls into such pageantry, it's not really helping them to see for what they really are, or what they really are worth. They're not just merely objects of esthetics, I'm sure that these ladies are intellectual in all their rights. I'm not saying i'm against in such events, surely it's fun to see them all under 1 roof, but to subject them to such competion, really does not prove anything at all, if not it just creates animosity within their circle.
We do not live, breathe n eat with them on a daily basis to know what they really are and how they feel. I'm sure for some, it's a delight to see the girls but lets not subject them in a competition, my intentions are nothing less than to emphatize with them, to know them, as I have mentioned, I feel that there are better ways to showcase such beautites other than a competition.
Also, i should've made clear on what I'm posting on, really, it's a commentary on the title of the pageant, having 'the prettiest' as part of it. The ladies are not objects we can put on a pedestal, only to knoeck 'em down. They are far worth more than that. Having such competion, is no different than gladiators fighting 4 their life, for survival, isn't it hard enuff for them to live their day to day live, just to survive?

A suggestion, how about instead, a fashion show and a dance to follow, a cabaret style show, where the girls can showcase their artistic abilities n talents. Woulsn't that b much more fun n enjoyable for all?

                    Re:Toronto's 5 Prettiest!

Hey, Anonymous - get a life of your own.

If girls want to compete, and an audience wants to attend that's good enough for me. If groups other than Asians want to have their own pageant that's ok too.

Those who feel demeaned need not have anything to do with the pageant.

In response to TGLover...I dunno what ur argument is about, but i feel that you are 'pissed' about something, do u understand what an editorial is? I take it that u do, again this is merely an expression of ones opinion, but if it has provoke certain queries, then the purpose is served.

                        Re:Toronto's 5 Prettiest!

                        My view is simple.

If Vanessa wants to organize a pageant, and if girls want to enter it and an audience wants to pay for it ... why not let them go ahead?

If you think it should be something else, why not organize your own, different event?

If Vanessa's event is seen by potential entrants as a problem, they will not enter.

It just seems to me that you are, at great length, trying to interfere in someone else's business.

I assure you that it is not my intention to be rude or nasty to anyone - I just like to let people do their "own thing".

As I said n stressed b4 that, what I've posted is merely an opinion...like how i respect yours, without judgements nor presumptions. And I am not. at great lengths, as u so put, to meddle in someones affairs, really makes me questions ur intellect, not to b rude nor careless. I dunno if you have been reading n misreading my posts, it seems to me that u only read what u like to see, mind u I commend u on ur passion regarding this. I have read Vanessa's posts regarding the Toronto's 5 Prettiest, again do not misunderstand this, this was merely an observation, I'd like for you TGLover, to read n look at the posts, with an openmind...and tell me, Id like to knw what u've read, I dont mean literally, then I rest my case.
I'm glad with these responses, you all have contributed here, I think this is healthy n civil, well, minus the presumptions...I have no intentions to offend anyone, just letting you know that.
