My comment is this. If I meet a person such as a t woman and they insist on going through the change I myself would never stop associating with them. Really now. If you are attracted to someone physically, emotionally, spiritually it wouldn't matter to me either way. Would any one else here feel the same or would some people maybe just nix their association after someone made the switch? Sadly on other websites and on documentaries I've seen some people just end all ties after the SRS is done. Which then gets me to question did that person really accept the other at all?
For the ladies I can only imagine what life is like now for them and what drastic changes could be made should they go through with it. Let alone the "gg" wanting to become a male.
Another thing that's bothering me and is not really related to my first comment but I must ask.
I can not find anything conclusive as to the cost for SRS and if the federal government covers it . I have researched that yes it's covered, only partially and not at all. Not only that I also read that the surgery is a low as a few hundred dollars to hundreds of thousands. Oh! Then theres the waiting period to have the procedure, I've read it can be as little as 6 months to as long as 7 years....
I promise this time not to get out of turn if this thread eventually becomes something like a Happy Saint Patrick's Day deal or whatever. It's just been a rough 3 weeks but things are finally getting into place here.
Ok. Floor is open....
Seeing as no one really answered your questions, I'll give it a try.
SRS or GRS is not covered by the federal government. It is covered by some provincial medical plans though.
BC does cover bottom surgery for t-girls, and on rare occasions, breast augmentation. BC does not cover chest reconstruction or phalloplasty for trans guys, (FTM).
Alberta covers all surgeries for both the guys and the girls but they only do a limited amount every year. I heard it's run like a lottery.
Ontario technically (I think) covers it for the women, but as someone else stated somewhere else, there appears to be some beauracracy preventing it from happening just yet.
As far as I know, none of the other provinces cover it.
The waiting periods are dependent on what stage in transition you are in, and where you live.
According the the Harry Benjamin Standards, which is generally regarded around the world as the final word on transsexualism, one year of RLE and one year of hormone therapy is the minimum requirement for surgery. However, provincial medical plans and private insurance companies can require longer. If you are paying it yourself, most surgeons will only require one year.
In BC, you are eligible for SRS, breast augmentation, chest reconstruction, and pholloplasty after one year of "Real Life Experience", (or "RLE"), which means you have lived as your true sex, full time, for at least one year. This applies whether BC medical is paying for it, or you are paying for it yourself.
I don't know what the timeline is in other provinces, however, once you are approved for surgery, and if you have funding, the wait list is not that long. For example, the wait list for surgery in Montreal for MTF bottom surgery is only about 2-3 months.

Hope that helps.
Thank you Haley. That did clarify a few things. One thing I'm still puzzled about is the total cost of the initial procedure itself.
I'm also looking at how other countries approach this surgery.

Canada seems to be lacking in a few aspects.
It's going to cost me, or rather the BC medical provider about $16000 for the surgery. I still have to come up with a $1000 for the after care plus airfare from Vancouver to Montreal. HopeAir will probably cover my airfare though. I'm scheduled for surgery in August.

And let your friendship be after the surgery as it was before. Change nothing. Those who are your friends will stick, those who are not true friends will go; as they were never true friends in the first place.
By doing nothing you accomplish everything; to gain true friendship.
