It's a mutation. When you combine large volumes of livestock existing in unsanitary conditions kept alive by black market antibiotics the virus particular to pigs or chickens has a chance to become resistant to them. As they morph they change and as a result may be able to attack some humans, and because they are already resistant to some antibiotics they can become untreatable. It's a classic catch 22.
There are lots of people at fault all the way down the line. A virus will only replicate if it can find an organism which will allow it to jump on. We're bombarded by different viruses constantly. Some stick, others don't.
Just remember, more people died from the Spanish Influenza Outbreak of 1919 (although it should have been called the American Flu, because it originated in a military base in the US and was brought to Spain by American soldiers) than in the First World War. Over 20 million people in Europe died in a matter of months.
Sorry to go on but it's a pet peeve of mine. The unprincipled use of agricultural antibiotics is a ticking bomb, because a virus doesn't think, it just is.

It's new, it's real, it's potentially very dangerous
Exactly! This new virus is a never before seen combination of various pieces of DNA which have come from strains of Bird Flu, Swine Flu and even Human Flu, so it has the potential to be especially virulent because of this unprecedented make-up and thus can find a home in all three forms of life.Originally posted by cobbler View PostIt's a mutation. . . . . . . a virus doesn't think, it just is.
While, Cobbler says, a virus just is, now is a good time to point out the main purpose in life a virus. That purpose is simply to reproduce itself over and over and over, ad finitum.
First it must find a host which will provide a cell for it to invade. Once inside that cell it sets up a factory. The purpose of this factory is to use the facilities and energy of the host cell to manufacture thousands of copies of itself, releasing them at some opportune time, to seek out yet more hosts to infect and so continue the process. That's all it's good for!

Highly unlikely, but it is possible!
Suppose a farm where they raise both chicken & swines in close proximity, feed their swine some dead, shraeded & mixed chicken... you get evian + swine flu... Now if you feed that to a human... now you get the human flu added to the mix... Theoretically, it is possible in the long run, but in reality it is highly unlikely. The ony place this swine flu can comeout of is from a lab somwehere in the US. And that is another topic!Originally posted by kristopin View Posthow does a virus exist that had swine flu dna from pigs and bird flu dna from birds and human flu somehow magically combine?

Mexico city as the centre of incubation
gosh....they shut all the school down in Mexico city.
I've heard that no restaurant is open for dine in. Only take out is available.
So far, more than 100 people died (if i'm not mistaken is 124) in mexico.
There are 4 students in Windsor (canada) got mildly infected, after coming back from their holiday in Yucatan.

Sooner or later humanity will finally come up close and personal with an epidemic that can not be controlled and you know what ..... nothing is going to be done effectively to stop it.
Sure sure .... a few regulations here....preventative measures there ... oh well.
This trend just seems like the catalyst of something really big to come
We've had the SARS scare ... mad cow disease .... bird flu ... swine flu ....
what next?

I saw that movie Blindness with Julianne Moore, Don Mckellar and Danny Glover. To me it was a disturbing movie to watch and I heard the book was more explicit. Years ago I remember this critic said that for the first time, she wish she could 'unread' this book because it was so disturbing and bleak.Originally posted by Rantsalot View PostSooner or later humanity will finally come up close and personal with an epidemic that can not be controlled and you know what ..... nothing is going to be done effectively to stop it.
