Trans Pride @ The SHC
http://www.sherbourne.on.ca/PDFs/TRANSPRIDE-2009.pdf
Wednesday, May 27, 6-9pm
333 Sherbourne St, 2nd Floor
Also, there's word of a Trans Pride Protest, on the evening of June 28, after the Gay Pride Parade. The argument being, it's not fair to have a Gay Pride Parade and a Dyke March without also having a Trans Pride Parade. So, there's going to be an unofficial march down Church St to protest these inequities.
I doubt I'll be present at either one, but if you want more info, send me a PM.

Update - Trans Pride March: Friday June 28, 8pm
Turns out the unofficial march is now official! Kudos to this year's Pride Committee for doing what previous committees couldn't (or wouldn't) do!

Marching for trans rights
Grassroots event gets pulled under Pride umbrella
Andrea Zanin / Toronto / Tuesday, May 26, 2009
"Everybody knows that trans people, throughout Pride and the weekend, we're all over the place," says Diane Grant, coorganizer of Toronto's first Trans Pride March. "We wanted a more concrete show of just how many of us there are."
The march, organized by Grant with her wife Karah Mathiason, is set to take place Fri, Jun 26 beginning at 8pm.
"It could be loud or quiet and thoughtful or whatever," says Grant, 52, a male-to-female transsexual lesbian. "We're leaving it wide open for people to express whatever they want to express, and it's evolving. I'm thinking there may be more banners and signs than we originally anticipated."
The march was conceived as an unofficial event but according to Grant, Pride Toronto recently asked the organizers to get a permit for the event.
"They seemed to be mostly concerned that, since they had the rights to Church St [via the street closure], that we had to do it with their cooperation," says Grant.
"I know that there are reasons they have," she adds. "They're concerned about who's on the street that they're responsible for, safety issues and stuff like that, but I mean considering we just basically wanted to go as a peaceful group from Bloor down to Carlton, just being as a group together... for myself [I] feel like we're being a little bit restricted by their needs."
Although Grant and Mathiason have secured a permit and will be meeting with Pride Toronto to discuss what the Trans Pride March will look like as an official Pride event, Grant notes there should be room to march without getting the okay first.

Gay Pride in Paris
Here in Paris the Gay Pride Parade is a huge celebration. Even straights come in large numbers. The different groups are very well marked and organized so you can see what is what. I love it and go every year. Actually informal street celebrations start about a week before and the gay bars are going like crazy. You girls should come here for vacation then. You would have a ball! By the way, did you know that the mayor of Paris has been openly gay for thirty years?

After giving it a lot of thought, I've decided to attend this year's march. I'm not a big fan of the parade (I'm more of the afterparty type) but I think it's important for as many people to show up as possible.
This is a groundbreaking event, and it's a way for trans people to demonstrate solidarity with the rest of the LGBTQ-etc. community. More importantly, it's a show of strength; we also deserve specific recognition and respect without our interests being subsumed into a wider range of demands.
The more people who attend, the more likely this will become an annual event. Make no mistake about it - this is a significant step forward for trans rights and trans recognition.
Without this event, the mainstream public might not realize a difference between trans people and drag queens. The Media tends to cover the most flamboyant, most sensational (and in my humble opinion, the most ridiculous) queens in the parade. We need to make it clear that many of us are just normal people trying to live our lives with pride. We don't want to be part of the spectacle, we just want to be part of society - with all the freedoms that come with it.
Trans people, friends, allies and admirers - I hope to see ALL OF YOU on June 26th!
