  • Let’s have a serious talk about scammers…

The massive increase of scammers posing as sex workers online is a serious issue. It is a universally negative problem, harming both legitimate sex workers and clients alike. Only the scammers benefit from these crimes, and because law enforcement has no interest in becoming involved, we must try to solve this issue ourselves. I have some ideas, but it will take a number of us coming together to create the change we all want to see.

The biggest problem is that basically all of the clients are on LL. Unfortunately, even if we were able to achieve the impossible, and somehow convince the majority of clients to migrate here or to another platform, the scammers would undoubtedly join the migration.

With the operators of basically any advertising platform prioritizing advertising revenue above all, the resistance to scammers looking to place ads on any new platform, will be minimal at best.

The scammers know law enforcement has zero interest in this mess, which emboldens them to operate at the extreme level we are now witnessing.

The only way this can be stopped, or even slowed, is informing clients of what to look for, and the steps to take to prevent themselves getting scammed.

Knowledge is power. The current ignorance displayed by the majority of clients makes them nearly powerless against this scourge on our industry.

The only possibly effective idea I have had, is if the clients and sex workers of this forum were to come together, and donate to a fund to finance an information campaign. This campaign would operate via ads posted on the LL pages in every major market.

These ads would warn potential clients of the high level of risk they face on LL, while informing of the steps they can take to mitigate said risk, and avoid becoming another victim. The ads would emphasize the extreme risks associated with the sending of deposits via e-transfer, directing to never send any money to any girl with whom you are not intimately familiar.

The finer details, like who would be entrusted with the donations, (Not me! Ideally it would be a senior member of the forum with whom everyone is familiar, and trusts) who would collaborate to compose the ad, etc.

I really believe this could have a very positive effect in our ongoing war with these scammers, and possibly even begin to put an end to the practice all together. The only way to force these scammers out, is to cut off the income stream LL currently provides.

It is my sincere hope that I once more and more potential victims become fully informed, the proceeds of their grift should slow to a trickle, making their efforts no longer profitable.

The only potential barrier to this plan, is LL themselves. Do you think they will even allow such an ad campaign on their platform? I have seen the odd ad warning of specific scammers on LL, but as an all out information campaign would undoubtedly have a negative effect on their bottom line, I’m not sure they would even permit it.

Please let me know your thoughts, or any ideas in the comments below.

I realize I’m quite new on this forum, so I’m mainly just putting this idea out there. I’m hoping a few trusted senior members will take this and run with it. Of course, I’m more than happy to assist in any way possible.

Please comment any suggestions you have below.

Knowledge is the deadliest weapon we have at our disposal, we just have to figure out exactly how to properly and effective wield that weapon.

    Together, we can do this!

I see your points, but I think LL would delete them as they would have the affect of turning people away from going to their site in general. The campaign would probably not be too effective even if you tried.

I understand by placing ads you may be saving those who don't read a forum or don't know about deposit scams. But...... We don't need to save the guys dumb enough to do it. Sorry, but its modern times. Anyone who sends an etransfer to a stranger on the internet should know better. Whether that is an escort or some "make 5400 with your 400 deposit to my crypto platform" , its clear that we should all just not do that. If you do it (most of have at least one in life), just suck it up and learn from it. We can't save people from their own stupidity if they chose to send their hard earned cash blindly over the internet.

As always, avoiding escort scams is very very easy.

Don't send deposits to ahead of time. Period. The only exception may be if you know the person from past encounters or they are super well known and on tour and its the only way you can guarantee your spot.

I do appreciate the thought you put into the post! just giving you my view!

I would normally agree that it’s hard to believe anyone could be stupid enough to fall for these idiotic scams.

Unfortunately, the reality is far different. Considering the fact there are currently at least ten fake ads for every legit ad here in Winnipeg, there have to be a significant number of people still sending deposits.

There are people who know very little about this culture. I saw an ad posted in Nanaimo by Mariana Cordoba, a South American porn star, who was the victim of a gang killing a number of years ago. And just the other night, there was an ad here in Winnipeg posted with Bailey Jay’s photos, under the name “Rose”. When I asked if they were really Bailey Jay, they confirmed they, in fact were… Okay, BJ…

I was simply providing a potential solution to the problem, for the growing number of forum members who have been asking what can be done.

Our shared assumption that LL would likely shut down any attempt to out their best customers, basically means there is no real solution to this issue.

With 99% of active clients never visiting forums like this one, and this not being an activity most openly discuss with their buddies, there is no real way to spread the word, and stop this scourge of scammers.

There is no real way to stop it if the biggest traffic sites don't take it seriously. I would think LL makes pretty close to the same or more money on scam ads as they do from legitimate escorts due to the volume of ads scammers place. So, you can see why they will be slow to do something about it.

In your case, having your ads buried under 10 fake ads is a detriment to you because someone will just paint you with that brush too without even reading your profile. So I do also agree it costs you business and its just as frustrating for the girls as it is for the guys.

Sex work has a seedy underbelly. You have bad people, criminals, scammers, and terrible clients all rolled up into this. I don't think we can ever get rid of scams, fakes, and all the bad stuff. Just have to navigate ourselves which is pretty easy to do if we use common sense. But of course, most people seem to forget their common sense when in certain emotional situations and become scam victims!

Oh yeah… The decisions which lead a person to fall into the trap of a scammer, are most often made by the smaller head. As the smaller head isn’t very intelligent, and even less rational, we should never trust its decisions.

          If only…

The best detourant in this space is word of mouth. Unfortunately this website Bock'6all LL links so folks don't really bother reviewing or discussing positives or negatives found there.

Well, it is as simple as clicking the link, and editing the ******* with “leolist”. But, I fully realize that is more than most are willing to do.

I agree that word of mouth is the best antidote to these toxic scammers. The problem with that is the tiny percentage of clients who are members of this forum. Add to that, the fact that very few clients discuss their experiences with sex workers with their friends, and there isn’t a ton of word of mouth happening.

in the end, as me and justvisiting2016 have mentioned, due to the vast majority of LL profits being the result of scammers, and not sex workers, means they are probably even more resistant to solving this issue, than even the scammers themselves.

It must be even harder these days for new providers to get their foot in the door, as potential clients may view them simply as "scams", especially when they look too good to be true, because of the sheer amount of them posing on the leo-list site

That is for certain. It was a pretty slow start for me, personally. Thankfully, things have started to finally pick up.

These damn scammers hurt everyone involved, and I think they are causing a lot of clients to simply give up out of frustration.

I’d say the rates are pushing more people out of the hobby more than scammers.

                    the scammers are easily identified.

Not my rates. I’d say I’m pretty reasonable.

…and if the scammers were easily identifiable, they wouldn’t exist. People only keep running scams if they are profitable. Therefore, there must be a lot of people falling victim to these scams.

I find it as hard to believe as you, but then again, we are aware the scams exist, and precisely what to look for. Most clients aren’t even aware they should be on the lookout for scammers. It’s much harder to avoid something you don’t even know exists.
