Hello everyone. I really don't know how to start off this thread as I've many ideas to put forth. I'm kinda out of practice in starting "new" topics as I haven't posted a new thread in.......how long??

I guess for starters my first question is:

What is your basic knowledge of HPV ? (human papillomavirus)

We can then go from there.

How about some useful information on that Human Papilloma Virus for starters?

Here's a start for your new thread then Rantsalot.

There is a lot of information these days about the HPV vaccine (Gardasil) being offered to school age girls in an effort to reduce the risk of cervical and uterine cancer later on their lives.

Not too many men know that they too can become infected with this virus, though most may have heard of Genital Warts. In the male the infection is generally seen as external Genital Warts while in the female of course, it can also develop into a life-threatening form of cancer or in other cases just remain as warts, being more of a nuisance. These will be the same kinds of warts experienced by men - warts on the external sexual organs or internally inside the vagina. These warts may also appear on and around the Anus.

N.B. The strains of HPV that cause genital warts does not cause Cervical Cancer and the cancer causing type does not cause genital warts. They are two separate strains of the virus, of which there are well over 100 known strains.

Genital Warts are generally quite easily removed by a physician, but despite their removal the virus itself remains and continuing to live on in your body. In addition, the warts may reappear even after removal.

For anyone who knows nothing about HPV [Genital Warts] and who is sexually active, here are a few pics of some cases to make you aware of what they look like.

I would like to state that I do not want to scare anyone with this thread and I always like finding facts before I post something on a topic like this but what I have found out from 10 various medical websites is HPV is common. Some people have it their whole life and don't have an outbreak where as others do.
It's estimated 80% of people in Canada have the virus. This is just an estimate though. There is debate that HPV or a strain of it can be cured/removed but in the readings I saw it was intensely detailed on the medical procedures that would have to be done and I couldn't simplify it. There is also debate on home remedies on a cure but that's a bunch of garbage I think.

Of course when going from website to website info changes from pros to cons and all that but these are the most common points I found let alone the millions and millions of cases I read of people treating their issue.

oh man....some people...very strange ..... perhaps i can share something later.

Uh, there's more to it that that. Think what you want but some of those "cold sores" are more serious than you think. i.e. like toban said ... cancer

In fact I believe all warts anywhere on your body come from HPV.
HPV often gets in through lesions in moist or dirty areas of the body,
              like genitals, feet and hands.

Since the act of sex causes lesions in the anus and vagina from the friction, it is easy to spread especially if one person has not washed their hands or other things well.

HPV does not appear externally as blisters! Most often it appears as a wart not unlike the garden variety of harmless warts. In some cases, the warts often shown, as a scare tactic I believe, the are somewhat like cauliflower but most often are just flatish.

Lisa, I am amazed at your apparent lack of knowledge about such a basic issue, or perhaps you are just trying to be controversial as usual. This is, as Rantsalot has pointed out, a very common disease, though it is not talked about as much as some others because it often shows no symptoms.

For this reason many governments around the world, including Ontario, have begun a very costly immunization program (3 shots @ $150 ea,) to slow its? spread amongst young females aged 8-23. In females it can be the cause of a deadly cancer, (cervical) but generally spreading to other organs before it is diagnosed, thus the Pap smear which is recommended for early detection of cervical cancer.

For males it may be more of nuisance but unfortunately an infected male may in turn infect unwitting females. For this reason, it is now being considered as a preventative for males as well, but the vaccine?s effectiveness has not yet been evaluated in males.

Being able to recognize it is the most important thing

Of course you don't give a fuck Lisa, as an SP you can't just give it away can ya!

Seriously though, being able to recognize Genital Warts is pretty easy, but blisters could be Herpes and that would be extremely serious!

Your Dr. would have no reason to test you for HPV Lisa. It isn't something you can do anything about anyway, even if it was found, but if it did show up externally as a wart(s) then she would simply treat the wart, likely by freezing it with liquid nitrogen, though there are other treatments too.

The big HPV danger is transmission (skin to skin) which basic condom usage takes care of anyway.

More info for those who want it

In looking for more info today on transmission of HPV I came across some startling news. Generally it seems, that in reality, condoms are not considered the outstanding solution they once were thought to be because of the ease of infection by means other than intercourse.

Another startling fact is that the PAP smear is used on men (gay males) suspected of developing anal cancer related to HPV.

Of the more than 100 types of HPV, only 11 of them, types 6, 11, 30, 40-45, 51, 54 are those considered to be related to Genital Warts.

The following link contains a good index to most points that may be questioned. http://hpv.emedtv.com/hpv/hpv-transmission.html

Here’s another that will provide more info to anyone interested in searching for more info.

                          Warning on freezing.

As toban had mentioned freezing is a method to remove the nasty occurrences on the skin with liquid nitrogen but I would also say that no matter what you hear or may see do not and I mean DO NOT mistake using computer dust cleaner as a substitute.

One of the many common horror stories I have read is how medical practitioners deal with patients who use this type of product as a home remedy only suffering from very bad side effects later.

If you don't know what I'm talking about here's a picture of a common air dust product.

Yes, a product like this has liquid nitrogen but there are other chemicals in the composition that are downright harmful to the skin and can even effect the internal system and start disease. I am getting this information from various social websites and medical magazines. Of course the information possibly has a bias but looking at the big picture it makes sense. A product that you use to clean plastics and metals and all that doesn't sound to me like its safe for the body.

Of course it's your body and you do whatever you want with it but I'd be very aware of the potential of more harm than good with a home remedy like this or any other. That's why doctors do what they do and use the correct stuff ( well we hope they do) when dealing with ailments.
