Crime in progress?

It's been so long since I've posted a thread here but I figured that this topic is important. It doesn't involve t girls and glorified nightlife partying but it still warrants some discussion. I'll try not to draw this out.

I was near the downtown core of my city and took a side street to a small shop that I visit to get supplies. The side street is rather run down and at the time was barren , only myself and 2 other guys on the opposing side of the road were there. I enter the shop and only took a minute to get my things and upon leaving the place I saw those 2 individuals across the way take their garbage and place it in a public mailbox. Now it wasn't a candy wrapper or anything small like that , no no no, it was an empty bag and drinking cup from McDonald's. The sad thing is after the deed was done those guys laughed about it, kicked the box and just walked away. The sad thing is all I could do was yell and curse at them. Had I tried to run up to them I may have been hit by a car or cyclist.

Now my question to everyone: Is this not a crime?

I've seen people place graffiti under bridges and knocked over public wastebaskets and get fined for it. Would this not register as an offence? I'm just curious about this as to what would have happened if those guys were caught by a cop.

Don't know about canadian law but in the states tampering
with the mail is a federal offense which would include tampering
with a mailbox as written above.

It's retarded behavior but not worth dying over if I were you I
wouldn't have said anything and just went on about your business

LOL I'm a man of action. If I see something that is wrong I get involved which has also got me into trouble in the past.

Tampering with the mail is a federal offense.
Not a simple civic fine.
They would have been better just to throw it on the ground.
I'm sure if you get the CSI team on that drink cup, they will be found.

These guys would have been arrested for mischief. As far as tampering with the mail, hmm probably wouldn't stick. Unless these guys were seen handling or deliberately destroying mail a lawyer would have those charges tossed.

Criminally they wouldn't get much more than a slap on the wrist. However Canada Post could take them to civil court for damages.

Einstein is right, this is what the police are for. Call 911 to report the crime. Get their physical descriptions, direction of travel, mode of travel, etc. And hey, it's the 21st century, take a picture with your cel phone.
