A transgender lawmaker was elected to Italy’s new Chamber of Deputies (Parliament) on Tuesday, one of just four LGBT representatives to make the cut. The Italian national gay association Arcigay is thrilled, as this is a two-fold increase on the previous parliament.
Luxuria was elected on the “Rifondazione Comunista” (Communist Party) ticket and becomes the first trangendered MP in Europe. She is prominent in Italy for her exuberant appearances on political talk shows.
Two other representatives, lesbian Titti De Simone of the Communist Party and Franco Grillini of the Prime Minister-elect Romano Prodi’s own “Ulivo” party have both been returned to the chamber.
The Greens are celebrating their first ever openly gay Senator, Gianpaolo Silvestri, for making it into Italy’s Upper House.
Arcigay is particularly pleased with the election of Grillini and Silvestri, as they were among the founders of the Italian gay organisation.
The election of Prodi as new Prime Minister is by no means yet certain, with caretaker Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of the political right, claiming irregularities at the poll. Prodi’s tenure will depend on whether he can garner enough support within a broad coalition of the left. Already the Communists are threatening to split. Italian LGBT activists are eagerly anticipating a left-wing government.
