There is something to be said about black and white photography. I like it, love it actually as I once had my own darkroom and everything that went with one.

There is something to be said about black and white photography. I like it, love it actually as I once had my own darkroom and everything that went with one.

I started with a Kodak Brownie and an Agfa developing kit when I was about 12 and did the whole process. Later on I built an enlarger using WWII war surplus lenses, a screw from a shoe stretcher for a focus adjustment, a flood light reflector, pieces of galvanized pipe and even made the bellows from Kid leather, and a printing box too.

But actually Fudge taking good B&W photos was infinitely more difficult than snapping color photos is today! Lighting and shadows were the keys to it all, as was processing the film and particularly the printing, as in burning-in or dodging specific areas to make a good print.

My biggest problem was trying to get a good glossy print off the ferrotype plate! I never did master that!

Actually I still get a feeling of nostalgia when I am around a hospital ot clinic X-Ray department and I can smell the "hypo" in the corridors.

It means a lot that you appreciate this black and white set. I was not sure how it would go down as everything seems, these days, to be about colour, HD, Dolby Didigtal etc..

I took the time needed to set up the lighting and camera just right for this shoot and I am pleased with the way it came out.
