It would be nice to read the article. I am not surprised by the finding but it isnt clear how the data was gathered and what exactly was measured. Probably IQ tests.
One of the clearest math books I ever read (I have always struggled terribly with math) was written by a Gay Interior Designer. He seemed to clearly intuit where comprehension breaks down, what early concepts need to be repeated or referenced in later subjects and so on, but in a manner I have never seen elsewhere. I remember wondering if his Gayness, creativity, both or neither had an effect on his natural ability to explain math concepts that put math professionals to shame.

With T-Girls, it may be biochemistry to some extent, however I suspect that just being so different from the dominant culture has something to do with it. Likewise, alot of artists, musicians, writers and so on have often lived their lives being and feeling very different from their peers and are just wired differently. Many of them are crazy smart, with or without higher education.
