    As far as I know

I am not a lawyer so I write from my own personal experience.

I did a legal name change and I have a woman's name now. Nevertheless, when I applied for government ID, I was told that, legally I am a man. On my drivers license, it says M for male. My picture is the likeness of a woman obviously but that M must remain as a matter of law until I have sex reassignement surgery (not going to happen).

Likewise, when I applied for a change of name on my Citizenship documents, my picture is the likeness of a woman and my name is a woman's name. However, there is still that M that classifies me as a male and for the same reasons.

As for the passport, it is the same issue. My picture is the likeness of a woman but that M still identifies me as a man. When I asked questions, I was told that this was not a question of opinion but a matter of law. There is no other legal way to identify a person but to classify them as either male or female. There is no third classification to represent the transgendered.

I don't know how you obtained a drivers license that refers to you as a female but legally, it is an error. For a passport, they are likely to pay more attention due to the importance of the document.

I have heard of instances where MF can be entered but this has never been offered to me when I made these applications.

Either way, it doesn't bother me. I know who I am and I am comfortable with myself. ID is just the government's way to classify and regulate and I don't giove it a second thought - I decide who I am. When travelling, I just have to jump through the hoops as required and, once that is done, I am still me.

Here in BC (or Ontario) you can get your psychologist or family doctor to write a letter or fill out the appropriate form and they will issue your BC Identification (drivers license or ID card) and it has a F on it for female. The reverse is true for F2M..

I do believe the same hold true in Ontario..

To obtain a passport with a F on it you need to have your SRS completed to meet the federal government guidelines. Now in completed it mean as far as you intended to go with your SRS. You then need to apply to have your birth certificate changed to represent you as female rather than male. This is again done by application with a supporting letter from your professional (doctor or shrink) with the appropriate government form.

Information on changing these ID's is available from the issuing authority in each case. They have guidelines for people in transition and undergoing SRS..

Once you have the birth certificate and the DL or ID you can use them to apply for your passport as a female..

I'm not familiar with Alberta, only BC and Ontario..

          Plain and simple..

What is interesting in Ontario is, if you have one of the new license's with the new higher security features, and it says female, then that is an acceptable document to travel to the US.

I have a friend in Buffalo that is awaiting her new license from the NY DOT but she is classified under gender as Male.

So I am a bit surprised that Soda got a license from the Ontario MOT with Female on it.

            Nikki's post

I remember an interesting article by Nikki concerning a similar subject. Here is the link:
