  • The Kitana Mai - Rants financial report : New Canadian money

"Canada’s gradual shift to slick, cleaner, synthetic banknotes won’t just mean your money can stand more wear, will not tear and, for the first time, will be recycled into other products instead of destroyed.
The Bank of Canada and the RCMP hope that once the polymer-based notes are in circulation – starting in November with the $100 bill – they’ll also be all but impossible to fake."

I first heard the announcement a few weeks ago on CBC's "The National" and thought to myself that it was about time this was done. We as a nation are trying to go to a paperless society and I couldn't understand why this took so long to be introduced. On the news I witnessed a few tests to the new durability of the cash. It can withstand some extreme hot and cold temperatures and is much harder to damage.

Shortly after I saw the news story I got talking to Kitana Mai and she brought up the points that if it's going to last longer , be more economically friendly and on top of that have more security features so it's harder to counterfeit then sure, why shouldn't Canada introduce it. Also it was brought up that countries like Austria and Mexico etc use currency like this.

The big push of course is counterfeiting. In Canada the 3 cities with the most fake bills in circulation are Vancouver, Montreal and yeah...Toronto. (i've spotted some myself) There was a decrease in counterfeits for a while then slowly they began to pop up again in mass quantities. The most popular "fake" is the 20$ bill.

The new 100$ bill will be out in November and have nearly the same look as the bills now. Slowly others will follow and the public will be urged to give up all the old paper bills they have.

So what do you all think?

Will these bills contain any electronic ability?
For example each bill could have a chip identifying it and containing more information about the bill. Possibly who and where it was used and maybe GPS to see where a particular bill is located.

Also will the new one hundred be as popular for Cocaine users?
Traditionally a crisp clean 100 dollar bill was the standard.
Will this one work the same or not as well?
It is said that 80% of the currency in the USA has traces of cocaine on it.
Will traces of drugs still show up on these bills?

Yes, it's going to be hard to print those transparent spots.

I agree that it's a great idea but until everyone refuses to accept the old paper bills there will still be some opportunies for the counterfeiters to carry on but I imagine banks and retailers will be more vigilant as there will be far fewer bills to scan in looking for fake bills.

I'm not a printer but I imagine that faking the see-through areas will be rather tough. Currently the counterfeiters will have a hard time finding the special highly dense inks and transparent stock to print anything on.

Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo Y Julieta, Century Sam, etc

Can I light my cigar with one of these new bills? Being polymer based (I think that's the term), will there be any toxic chemicals when I burn it?

                  ...

I'm all for it. As we're on the topic of counterfeiting do you all suspect that some of the ladies have come across a fair amount of fake bank notes? Considering that there are a large amount of girls in TO and Van and that these 2 cities are notorious fo the counterfeiting racket I could just imagine how some jerk would try and pass along fakes.

Early 90's, I believe Mexico uses them too.

Well, it happens. But here is the EASIEST way to identify a fake Bill. Real money is not printed on paper. It's printed on cotton. This is the reason that it does not come to pieces in the wash. Fake money is printed on paper. Easiest way is to wet the money and try to rub a hole in it. If you can ...it`s fake. That simple. Try it with real money. You can`t.

                    Hope that helps.

Their notes are also all different sizes based on denomination so they are easier to identify.
