Thats so bad ass, I hope I have the cash to fund a trip like that someday. Get a solid pair of sandals, some film cameras, 40 or 50 rolls of 400 ISO and go check out everything. That looks so fun!

How long were you there? I wonder how long Id have to stay to really immerse myself in the culture

I was only there 2 weeks this time but I have been many times before.
Most of the shots I only took with my little $100 sony, except the statue pics.
Always have trouble getting good night time pics if it is not close up.

You can become immersed in the culture as fast as you like.
Go to Pattaya and find a nice ladyboy from Isaan and ask them to take you to their village.
Most will be ecstatic to do this.
Bang you will be immersed instantly, be prepared to pay for everything and everyone though.

Troll, why in the world would you want film cameras? I resisted switching to digital but now I would NEVER go back. The thought of it is ridiculous. ISO 400? I regularily shoot at ISO's up to 3200 in low light and the results are spectacular.

Because you can shoot ISO 400 as ISO 100, or you can shoot it as a higher ISO and just push process it.

Because I still like fucking around with my film camera if theyre photos -for me- Didn't say I wouldn't bring a digital, didnt say I wouldnt bring a medium format and a tripod For for walking around 400 ISO film gives you a lot of room to play around with. We all have our preferences . I really dont like going to higher ISOs on digital, I dont like the noise that starts going on past 400 on my older DSLR. Anyways, I dont want to hijack a thread, take it to PM if you like :-)

I wouldn't recommend taking a film camera to Thailand because of the climate.
It is well known to photographers that the extreme heat and humidity is very hard on photographic equipment.
So the less moving parts in your camera the better.
I think I may have damaged my video camera taking it near a waterfall there.
You do not want to be hauling your good camera or tripod around unless you are going to some temple or ruins specifically to shoot. Or if you are staying near somewhere you can go shoot close.
You don't want your expensive equipment out of air conditioning all the time there.
Addtionally it is so busy and hectic in Bangkok you don't want to be hauling this stuff around too much.
Taxis are all small and space is always at a premium, theft is always a possibility.

Thailand is the most photographed place in the world and any picture you take of most tourist stuff there, can be found 1000 times over on the internet.
There is still a law that only allows you to bring 2 rolls of film into the Kingdom of Thailand.
It is believed this was to control the exposure of their culture,
but also possibly to make huge money on film.
Now with digital that law is somewhat passe, however you cannot bring more than 2 cameras as well.
Making porn is 100% illegal BTW.

Most of the time I just carry my little Sony cybershot.
It takes great 12mp shots and ok video, plus it is low key.
I am pretty much tired of temples and ruins but they are the best place to use your good equipment.
However there is 8000 other people shooting at these places too, so it just doesn't seem so special often.

I have a canon t-90 that i really want to put to the test, I"ve heard they're like the ak-47 of SLRs. Didn't know about that two roll film law. Like i"d said, i like shooting on film. I enjoy spending time in the dark room, spent enough on getting the thing up and working.

That really sucks about the film and camera limitations. Of course I'd want to shoot with some girls, but not necessarily porno. Still seems like a way fun place to go. I'd almost be more worried about harsh elements screwing up my digital or causing moisture to get into the sensor than on my beat up ae-1s and my lubittel or a range finder. But yeah, film restrictions/ fuck. digital all the way.

Cameras:
One still camera or one movie camera can be brought in without duty.
Five rolls of still camera film or three rolls of 8 or 16 mm movie camera film may be brought in duty free

It isn't restricted, you just might have to pay duty.
However these laws may not be enforced anymore or for a long time.
I go through Passport control but never have been stopped at customs.
Even if they checked you I doubt the would do anything unless it looked as if you had enough equipment to produce something bigger than a vacation.

It kind of depends where you are and what your expectations are and how long you spend.
If you go to a bar and take a girl you always pay bar fine of about $500 baht ($20), if you stay with a girl for subsequent days you are supposed to pay the bar fine daily or the girl may have to pay it herself.

As far as Thailand goes you will pay more in Bangkok and less in Pattaya.
Bangkok generally has better looking and more educated ladyboys, less likely to be looking for a boyfriend.
Pattaya generally has plainer, poorer ladyboys from the rice farms, more likely to be looking for a boyfriend.

Then there is Short time and long time.
Short time is usually considered anything from 0-3 hours, or so.
Long time is usually overnight or longer.

Take a bar girl for a short time you will probably expect 1000-2000 for short time.

A majority of ladyboys will try and extend their stay with you as long as they can.
If you like the girl and would like to spend many days with her, usually you will just give her a nice gift at the end.

Often when you spend several days, they will urge you to buy them gold during your time together, just calculate this into what you think you owe.
Other stuff you buy them like clothes and stuff is just considered bonus, so don't count that.

So the beauty of thailand is they girls usually don't ruin the moment by discussing business.
Usually that all happens at then end of an engagement however long that may be.

Girls on the street will be much cheaper with no bar fine, but you are taking a bigger risk.
There is usually a reason they are not working in a bar, especially if they are good looking.
