Gretzky is certainly one of the greatest player, possibly the greatest, in hockey history.
However hockey is not that big in many place especially the USA, but it is growing.
However kids in the states know Sidney Crosby and the new crop of US players.
Whether he was as good a hockey player as Gordie Howe or Bobby Orr is up in the air, but his stats are better.

Basketball is a big one. Cheap like soccer. The funny thing is, Cricket is number 2 presently. A game that does not even register in North America. The only reason I mentioned the other sports is because it is not only sports popularity we have to take into account. The people I mentioned were highly Charismatic people.
