  • Bill Promises To Censor the Internet

The PROTECT-IP bill is making its way through the halls of the United States government, and besides an unfortunate name change, the bill has been altered by the House of Representatives in such a way, it would essentially allow the government and/or various corporations that feel infringed upon the ability to censor the Internet in whatever way they see fit.
Should the United States government be allowed to censor the Internet to fit their own whims and desires?
Perhaps that last part is wrapped in some hyperbole, but then again, after reading portions of the updated bill, as well as some of the reactions to it, it?s pretty clear that, if passed, the American public could soon be using a very different version of the Internet than what we?re used to. The sad thing is, besides a small section of informed reactions to the bill, very few in the American public seem to know and/or care about the implications of PROTECT-IP, which, thanks to input from House of Representatives, now goes by the unfortunately-named E-PARASITE Act.

Here?s an embed of the document, although, it?s doubtful anyone outside of the tech/Internet sector will actually concern themselves with it:

so what you are saying is he is trying to take the freedom of posting anything on the internet away.
isn't that against nature of freedom of speech. i may have read this wrong, but if that is the case then hes a twit. people should be able to post whatever they want as long as it's not a criminal offence or something that shouldn't be posted of common sense in knowledge

Reading the legal document and the Bill it doesn't look like they are censoring us the way they do in Turkey in which the state is censoring and blocking most traffic. I believe it is only recently that they unblocked Youtube. From what I read they will not be blocking anything yet. From my understanding, certain sites will be blocked from search results from google and other search engines. This is not really much different from them blocking all he porn results, just now it seem like they are blocking Torrent sites.

Think about why this happened. The USA is the largest entertainment producing country in the world. Sites like the Pirates Bay operates out of Sweden where copyright laws are a joke.

heck out the legal threats against the pirates bay. They are more or less laughing in the face of the people that produced this stuff.

I do not support this Bill. It is dangerous, and can easily be misused, Reading over it carefully, you can see all the loopholes in the law.

If you remember, when the internet become worldwide in the 90s...porn ran rampant. You could type "Grandma's Chocolate Chip Cookies" and get porn results like Lesbian Grandmothers making Cookies.

They are basically taking this to another level.
It's not like these sites like the Pirates Bay will disappear. If you read the Bill, what they want to do is remove these sites from search results as well as block mediafire. I believe that you will still have access to the site as you can type the name into the address bar. It's not much different then the filters in place for porn results.

If people stop paying for this stuff, you won`t have any movies or tv shows to watch.

You will have to watch home made movies and music on Youtube, because professional entertainers will be out of business.

Reality shows will become someone`s webcam.
                    Theatre will be school plays.
Movies will be your neighbours vacation movies or some posers helmet cam video.
Musicians won`t be able to afford to record their songs professionally, so you will have to wait for them to tour to your location to hear them.

                        true?
If you are happy just watching yourself, I guess.

However you are the one that said you NEED your shows and movies.
I doubt home movies will replace what you like to watch.

Who will employ Brad Pitt and other Hollywood hunks?
Most of them don't have real life skills.

                            Freedom and security.

In any modern society there is always a conflict between the values of freedom and security and it is impossible to choose as they are both important things that we need to live modern successful lives. That issue becomes increasingly important as the threats grow larger which has certainly happened in this technological age. How is it that we can fight the powers that be that are supposed to protect us and still allow the freedoms upon which our nation holds in high standing? It's not an easy question. Anyone who tells you it's an easy question hasn't thought about it enough. In the end we have to take those steps that protect us and yet at the same time we always need to be vigilant, that the very freedoms that we built this country on, the things that make us different, that those freedoms are protected.
