As many of you know, Prostitution laws are in an attempt to become decrimminalized. Because it can help prevent stuff like this.
Police say a sex-trade killer may be on the loose as they sounded a warning Thursday to others in the ?high-risk business.?
Leanne Freeman, who also went by the name Amanda, was working as a prostitute when she was killed on Tuesday, police confirmed.
The 23-year-old Winnipeg native was found shot in the head at about 1 a.m. on Unwin Ave., a secluded roadway near the Hearn Generating Station in the Port Lands area.
Police suspect her killer was a client.
?I cannot say with any certainty whatsoever that Leanne?s employment had anything to do with her murder,? said Det. Sgt. Brian Borg. ?I cannot rule it out. It?s too early to say.?
Police don?t know how Freeman advertised her services, but believe she had been working as a prostitute in Toronto since the summer.
Police are also getting help from the sex crimes unit, whose special victims unit works closely with outside agencies and with sex-trade workers themselves.
That unit is being asked to address fears that will arise from sex-trade workers in the wake of the slaying.
Police believe Freeman was murdered at the location where she was found.
The 911 call came from a driver who thought Freeman had been struck by a vehicle. Officers from 55 Division and Traffic Services responded along with emergency workers.
When police found her she was still alive. Fully clothed, she was lying in the middle of the road in ?obvious medical distress,? Borg said.
She was rushed to St. Michael?s Hospital and pronounced dead at 2:22 a.m. Tuesday.
?At the time, there was very heavy rain and in that area it is very, very dark,? Borg said. ?There was no artificial lighting.?
Borg said Freeman was known to police but did not have a criminal record for prostitution-related offences.
She has a history of drug use in Winnipeg and the Toronto area. She had lived a transient life, also residing for a time in Sudbury.
?Leanne?s death has touched a nerve with many people,? the homicide detective said.
Freeman?s body lies unclaimed because her family said they can?t afford the expense of bringing her home and burying her.
She was the city?s 42nd homicide of the year.
