Hurricane Sandy

39 people died and 8.2 million people without a power because of storm sandy.

It is a terrible event however,
I still think it is all still sensationalized.

How many people die in the US every 24 hours anyway?
Were these people really old and going to die any time?
I doubt all 39 deaths are directly related to the storm.
Every fall many die in early winter storms across the US.

New York city alone is over 20 million people.
A major weather event will easily take out alot of people's power at once.
The population density on the East coast is extremely high.
A similar geographical power outage in other places may only affect thousands.
I would suspect more people in China and India live without power all the time than live in the entire USA.

I mean sure, places in the East are not used to these strong winds.
However cities in the West and midwest are used to winds even stronger than these.
To see the crane that failed, I would say that someone got lazy, the crane should be able to stand this wind.
Faulty workmanship due to complacency is possible, they hardly ever get this weather so contractors will cut corners.

Prairie cities see tornadoes and wind events all the time, but they are ready for them.
Still there is damage and deaths every summer.

Everyone that lives near an ocean knows in the back of their mind that they could be wiped off the face of the earth in seconds at anytime. It is crazy to think these storms that are always possible, will never happen.
Most of the flooding is avoidable if you prepare, however no one wants to spend much money if it is only going to happen every 100 years.

Katrina doesn't happen every year, so I doubt Sandy will too.
And they said this wasn't even the worst storm ever.
