But it gets better. The United States is the most armed nation in the World. 88.8 (2007) of the RESIDENTS are armed. That is more than 30% more than Serbia, Yemen, Switzerland, Cyprus, Saudia Arabia and Iraq who are the next most armed nations. Let's see....

    • Iraq: Operation Desert Fox 1998, Iraqi Shia uprising (2nd Sadr uprising) 1999, Iraq War 2003-2011, (post U.S. withdrawal) 2011
    • Yemen: 1994 civil war in Yemen, Insurgency in Yemen 2004, South Yemen insurgency 2009, Sa'dah insurgency 2004-2010
    • Saudi Arabia: Gulf War 1990-1991, Insurgency in Saudi Arabia 1995, Sa'dah insurgency 2004-2010,
    • Cyprus: Turkey invaded this country in 1974 without UN approval: it's been a mess since. The country is divided with the "green" line being patrolled by the UN.
    • Serbia: Kosovo War 1945-1986 & 1998-1999, Croatian War of Independence 1991?1995, Bosnian War 1992-1995,

This leads me to believe two things.

    1. It's apparent that it must be more dangerous to live in the US than in these countries.
    2. The Swiss are a PRIME example of responsible gun ownership, something that lacks in the US.

All I see is an irresponsible government. I keep tuning into these press conferences and hearing "It's about the families" or "Our thoughts and hearts go out to the families." BULLSHIT! A government that cared would ban firearms. The United States people have proven that they cannot handle that responsibility. Protect your people...that is what governments are suppose to do. Take away that right. I have heard so much propaganda coming from people protecting the 2nd Amendment. Just remember one thing....he who lives by the sword, dies by the sword.

Depressing reading, particularly at this time of year. In my opinion (and I don't claim to be better / worse informed than the average...) is that the US government isn't so much irresponsible as willfully blind. To me (and again, I claim no special knowledge) it's totally self-evident that a governmental system that not only ALLOWS the ownership of military-grade automatic weapons etc. but actually CALLS FOR IT is going to give the whackos out there access to the tools required to live out their sick fantasies.

On another forum today one poster was arguing that you shouldn't ban such weapons in the US 'cos there was a somewhat similar event in China, where a knife-wielding lunatic slashed 22 kids at a school. Someone else responded that the knife attack left 22 INJURED, whereas as the attack in the US left 27 DEAD - automatics are a lot better at killing than knives (no shit...). SO it comes down to the weapons - without access to the firearms, the potential for mass-slaughter goes down.

There is no political stomach in the US for facing down the NRA, the loony-tune militis types, etc. I hate to say it ('cos I like the States) but the genie is out of the bottle. The weapons are out there already.....

    So sad.

The United States is the most dangerous place i have ever been.
New Orleans in particular is nasty.

Racial tension and the war on drugs don't help.
The severe criminalization of marijuana has created an extreme gang culture.
Hopefully the new legalization of pot in Colorado and Washington will help things.

As the modern society brings more leisure time, it also brings too much time to think.
Kids are sent to Psychologists as soon at they can speak and often put on pharmaceutical drugs.
All the things that are wrong with them are pointed out and often it is very brutal.
People learn to resent their parents and friends while trying to balance on a cocktail of prescribed drugs.
Drugs usually prescribed because the parents don't want the bother.

Is it any wonder that the first person todays gunner killed was his mother?
In other cultures these people may find demons to attack other than their friends and family,
but in the continental US there is no one else to lash out at.

It isn't the guns that are the problem it is the people.

The NRA and other gun nuts will argue that if only these small children were armed they could have defended themselves.

Actually, the poster i mentioned earlier suggested that the teachers should be armed. ANyone see a problem with that suggestion? Sad fact is, I kinda agree with the crazy logic - as banning now won't get rid of the vast majority of guns, the only response is to arm teh whole friggin' country - exactly what the NRA wants.

I am sincere when I say i like the States, but the whole society seems to have a collective death-wish. The REAL threat to the US is entirely internal.

          Crazy days all round

The problem is that these kids don't get mental help, they get pharmaceutical drugs.
The shrinks tell them what is wrong with them, rather than work through their real problems.

Their parents are more worried about themselves than taking care of their kids.
Drug the kids and problem goes away.
Mothers can pursue their careers without the hassle of children.
Fathers cannot use discipline or the threat of it, so drugging the kids works.
Throw easy access to guns in the mix and you have tragedy.

So you have drugged up kids with artificial complexes planted in their brains and no parents that care.
Who the hell said having a career is more important than being a mother, it is not!
Many women have a false idea of what life is all about, if you want a family then have one.
This modern family hybrid is bullshit.

                Think about it.
Kids don't need drugs, they need LOVE.

Sorry but I disagree. The entire country is ill. Re-read Crag's post...especially the section I bolded. The civilian population has no NEED for military grade weapons...FINAL. What the fuck is the regular Joe going to do with an M-16? If it was up to the NRA, the entire population would be armed, and it would be a warzone just like it is today. You want to know who needs these weapons? Drug dealers, gangs, etc. Basically the lowest form of life. You get a 9 year old doing drive-bys in the getto and you are going to try to sell me a story of mental illness? Fine...here is a good one for you. The USA leads the world in reported mental illness. But last time I checked we do not allow crazy people to have weapons. I don't think they allow M-16's in the mental ward. Yet they allow the craziest nation in the world to arm itself. VERY INTERESTING!

                    That is terrible to hear.
Mexico and Latin countries have a far different problem than the US.

I agree that the causes may vary from the US to Latin America, but the net results are all too similar - large numbers of people dying via firearms. I think the differences are important, though - as Crag points out, Latin America is prone to ultra-violent, machismo-fuelled groups that are (though common) a sub-set of society. I am certainly NOT saying that their victims are in any way less deserving of our sympathy and concern, but the US is different - there, the whole country / society is saturated with weapons far beyond those needed for legitimate self-defence (which, in my opinion, would leave firearms in the hands of the military and law enforcement only. Hunting? Maybe...I flip-flop on that one a bit....).

As i mentioned earlier, I think it's probably too late for any wholesale attempt to remove weapons from private citizens in the US. It would be political - and possibly literal - suicide. You'd end up with well-armed militias going toe-to-toe with the US Army. Some of the miltia types are wannabe's, who'd fold like wet cardboard, but otheres are ex-military - it would be ugly, costly and brutal - maybe not quite like Irag, but certainly a bloody mess.

All I can say is, I'm so grateful to live in Canada. I hope the States can come to a collective, sane and reasonable response. I just don't see it as all that likely.

The Japanese have pretty much eliminated any kind of gun problem. What to know how?
Almost no one in Japan owns a gun. Most kinds are illegal, with onerous restrictions on buying and maintaining the few that are allowed. Even the country's infamous, mafia-like Yakuza tendto forgo guns; the few exceptions tend to become big national news stories.

Japanese tourists who fire off a few rounds at the Royal Hawaiian Shooting Club would be breaking three separate laws back in Japan -- one for holding a handgun, one for possessing unlicensed bullets, and another violation for firing them -- the first of which alone is punishable by one to ten years in jail. Handguns are forbidden absolutely. Small-caliber rifles have been illegal to buy, sell, or transfer since 1971. Anyone who owned a rifle before then is allowed to keep it, but their heirs are required to turn it over to the police once the owner dies.

IT's just the overflow of the latin influence, and mainly latin gangs acting latin.
Detroit gangs are not the same, there is shootings but it is gang member vs gang member.
They don't do the degrading things, they just kill you.

These are not the original people we are talking about.
The USA is disturbed people getting guns, not specifically gang violence at all.

I think if the USA wants to have all these guns around then all citizens should have to do a tour of duty in the Army or militia.
This will allow them to have more respect for guns and learn how to use them properly.
This will also give them a view of a foreign enemy so they can forget about their perceived domestic enemies.

If you want a society with guns then everyone should be trained to respect and use them, not just some.

The fact is though, most of these killers are men.
Men tend to use force to solve their problems, our modern society has left men with little ways to solve their problems but with weapons. No one has respect for a strong man anymore and women scoff at the traditional man.
Children are trapped by a society that does not operate the way humans should.
We naturally want to go one way but society tells us that nature is wrong.

                          Get back to basics.

Point taken Shyla - definitely there are (many) places in the US where you see those conditions. However, I still think we're talking about 2 separate things - though they are of course heavily related through the easy ( compared to 98% of the planet) access to firearms. The latest slaughter took place in a (as far as I know, anyway) relatively quiet, below-the-radar New England community.

I guess at the end of the day, whether caused by cultural, political, social, legal (or most likely a combination thereof) factors, the fact that there is a constitutional right/obligation to possess and use military-grade weaponry against all enemies foreign and domestic leads inevitably leads to a system that allows private citizens access to lethal firepower.

I remember seeing a story on 60 Minutes a few years ago about a pending lawsuit in the US. The Department of defense sought to limit access to 50-calibre ammunition: they knew that banning the weapons that use this ammo (either a heavy machine gun mounted on an armoured vehicle, or a 5' long sniper rifle) as a non-starter, so they sought (reasonably, I thought) to make procuring ammo tougher. So they got sued - 'cos someone (NRA lawyer, maybe?) thinks that citizens have the right to own tools that can shoot through an armoured limo, or bring down a helicopter from over a kilometer away....... Dunno what happened with this case, to be honest.
