Now of course these rules or guidelines are not written in stone....but they are common sense....

For example #7:

7. Don?t ?out? a trans person.
If you see a person on the street that you know to be trans, it is a private matter and not appropriate to tell your friends that the person is trans. It is also not appropriate to mention anything that would ?out? a trans person if you are with that person in a public setting ? unless you want that person to tell everyone what you did at the office party last year.

That is a good list Shyla and I think it could make an excellent sticky somewhere on this forum for the education of those new to the scene. Just as valuable as that list though, is the companion list linked to it. "Ten Things Not to Say to a Trans Person"

In particular, item 8. ?I can still see the woman (or the man) in you.? might have helped give some guidance to Barbie had she been aware of it before writing her letter of complaint to "The SUN". Perhaps she might also find item 9 from that same list of some interest as well ?Are you afraid that people will hate you or want to hurt you??

Good for her! I am happy The Sun is standing behind her! Isn't it great to be moving in the right direction? I just find it totally disgusting that even people in our small community are against her being accepted as a Sunshine Girl. Wouldn't surprise me if that mess on here started that petition.

Toronto Sun editor-in-chief James Wallace wasn't surprised when Xtra reached him for comment. He says it wasn't until after the Sun ran the photos that there was "suspicion" that Maltepe wasn't quite like the girls it usually runs for the feature. But that doesn't make a lick of difference, he says.

"She's cute and we ran her photo," Wallace says.

He also hinted that she wasn't the first t-girl in the series.

I think it is great that everyone has fans and people who respect them. No one here is bullying Barbie nor has anyone made any unwarranted attacks on her. At one point or another she has attacked 1 if not everyone in this thread without warrant. People will see you for what you present to them. There is a difference between stating your opinion and attacking someone.

Less than a year ago, on June 19th, the Ontario government passed Toby's Law, which amends the Province's Human Rights Code to protect people from discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression. This enshrines in law the basic right of people to live as the gender they believe they are. There's nothing here for the Sun to retract. It's not like they skewed a hard news story, which they do as a matter of course. Had the model specifically lied about being transgender, the paper would certainly be saying so now. They didn't ask if she was cisgender; she didn't tell them she was transgender.

Given the new legislation, it would be interesting to see what might happen if the Sun were to question models about their gender status.

What is interesting about the story is that the Sun, a newspaper that has had strained relations with the LGBT community over the decades, ends up publishing a photo of a trans woman that is clearly intended to appeal to its male heterosexual readership. One of the previous posters put up a link to a story in Xtra about the Sun photo. That story links to a previous article in Xtra, describing the Sun's treatment of the LGBT community. Recently, local media have been falling all over eachother to eulogize the late Peter Worthington, the Sun's former editor-in-chief, who, following the 1981 Bath House raids in Toronto, published the names and addresses of men charged -- charged, mind you, not convicted.

So the little paper that has dedicated itself to killing progressive thinking ends up promoting it. Karma.
