  • Supreme Court to hear case on June 13th

On June 13th the Supreme Court of Canada will finally hear the appeal of the case involving the legalities around the sex trade business. Seems like sex trade workers will finally be free to do their thing but will be licensed by municipalities.

    Changing the title might help!

    I would suggest that you change the title to;

"Supreme Cock to hear case on June 13th"

And I bet that you would get more responses to this interesting thread!

Aside from my sense of humor lol, I don't know actually if decriminalization is in the best interest of the industry or not. At the first glance, it appears that decriminalization is good at least for the consumers!

What are the downsides to this possibility?

Jane, I'd be interested in hearing about your thoughts on either side this issue, particularly as it might affect the industry vs the consumers.

As a long-time consumer, while I can see certain benefits might accrue to we consumers, I realize that we must also be concerned about the effects of such a change on the viability of the industry upon which we all depend!

So, what's the good and the bad in your estimation?

Pros to Cons or vice versa

Some pros are the obvious reduced fear of arrest and harassment by police. The ability to bank your earnings without worrying about stuffing a jar or vault. Not be charged for running a bawdy house. Being able to hire driver/security you trust. Being able to keep your family safer with these benefits. There is more but I had a brain fart. Cons: Pimps getting liscenced and hiding behind the legal status to human traffic, as we know it happens regardless of the law but it "may" make the little effort police put into responding to violence against us a bit more difficult. Have to pay taxes on earnings for real now lol. Costs associated with "required" liscences, wages for sec/drivers, insurance etc. More focus on our streetside bros n sis's by police and predators. Again probably a few more to add onto these lists, anyone?

          Just a thought!

In my opinion, legalizing this business will take away some of the tempting elements of this industry! What the average consumer might not realize is that with the current laws, many potential providers (ggs, tgs) are excluded from the market. Those girls/gurls basically can't engage in the game, whether as independents or through agencies, with the potential risks associated with the prostitution laws.

The ones that are engaging in the current game can basically be divided into two groups. The first is the professional escorts and those are mainly the refined independent escorts who posses the brains and the assets to run their own affairs. The second group are the ones with assets only, most of these work either through agencies or independently and you can easily spot them in BP or CL ads for example. Any experienced hobbyist would know that a rendezvous with a girl/gurl from the first group is wholly different on many levels and favorable despite their higher premiums.

The current criminal laws, keep the balance of the providers to consumers to the extent that each of the two groups share their fair piece from the pie. However, with decriminalization you create abundance as opposed scarcity! Would this have an effect or would it be matched by a surge in the consumers numbers is something that is not easy to predict!

In my opinion, the current criminal laws were not created to chase every single provider in the country, but rather to ensure that the public is not disturbed by the prostitution scene. If you are a provider running your business in a discrete manner, the chances are very law that you will get in trouble but if you are advertising your exact address on BP or CL ad the opposite is true.

Overall, I think that the decriminalization will affect the first group (independent refined providers) and consequently the experienced hobbyists! But since this is the minority, the effect will not be remarkable or obvious to the majority!

I think people should realize something when it comes to legalization. Most things in North America that are illegal are things that the government cannot regulate or that the government feels it is not getting a big enough piece of the pie. The decision concerning the legalities is a smoke show. They are buying time to figure out how to the most money out of this.

Will legalization change the client base. Maybe, but I don't believe it would be because it was legal or not. Escorts have been around for a long time. Drugs, liquor, etc. have all been illegal at one time. So was gambling. Yet the government now controls gambling, drugs, liquor and now prostitution. Makes you wonder who the real mob is.

Here's the thing, if the government is going to regulate prostitution, some credibility will be demanded. Business Licenses, mandatory STD testing, etc. All ways the government will funnel money back into the system. Costs for being an escort could/will go up. If this is the case, then expect a possibility that those costs could be pasted onto the client. This also could have an effect on the quality of girl available. Established girls should have no problem setting up most of this stuff. Girls that barely get by will fade away, as fines could be serious for operating a business without a license. Sites like Shemale Canada and Backpage may have to adjust if Laws change concerning escorts advertising without a license.

This could also have an serious impact for the future. Regular girls starting out can set up this type of thing much easier than a Transsexual. It's already very expensive to transition. These extra steps and costs of escorting now make it more difficult to start escorting and transition. This licensing now makes it difficult for younger girls to get into escorting as few have the business sense to setup and run a business. I know tons of girls that live client to client, might be a lot harder when you factor in taxes and a GST payment.

Supply and Demand have always ruled our society. With less girls being able to get licenses due to costs, and costs on the girls that will be left rising, I can't really see costs going down due to legalization.

I honestly don't know what everyone is so excited about. Some people seem to believe that they can now put money in the bank. But you could always put money in the bank, as long as you declare the income and pay taxes on it. It seems as though people don't understand that Tax Evasion carries a larger penalty than Prostitution. If you do not declare your income, the government can nail you for prostitution and tax evasion. They can also freeze all your assets. The main reason prostitution is illegal is that escorts cannot be trusted to declare their income. Hence why regulation is close to impossible without licensing.

I don't understand how anyone can run a business without a business license, accounting and legal team. Especially in our industry.

I think it would be a great idea if some of the girls hired you as a business manager or consultant to set them on the right path. I'm positive it would be to there benefit.

I will give it away for free. Get a good accountant. That's it.

Pretty much the same advice I would give any business owner.
