  • Best Wishes to Calgary Forum Members

I just heard on my local news here in the Buffalo area about the devastation currently going on in Calgary. If I were a religious man I would say my prayers are with you folks, but since that is not the case, all I can do is hope that everyone is safe and offer my best wishes. Parts of my country have gone through tremendous disasters recently and now it looks like Canada too. Someone has got to do something about this global warming before the planet is destroyed.

I heard that the Saddledome in Calgary is flooded up to row 10!

Not sure if I believe the global warming thing.
We have had one of the coldest years ever where i am living.

Natural disasters happen, maybe they have been happening more.
However part of the reason that it seems more is CNN and the internet broadcast every little thing now days.
More people have diseases than ever before, but a lot of it is just because they have more knowledge now.

We had way more tornados 20 years ago, now we have more floods.

The earth could blow up tomorrow for all we know.

It is more likely a cycle that we have no control over.
The earth was frozen and then melted.
The melting was what caused us to emerge and it has gotten warmer ever since.

The earths cycles seem to go to very hot which leads to very cold and so on......
We make ourselves out to be something really special, but we could just all disappear in one second.

I 100% agree with you Crag, the earth has cycles. Weather patterns have as much to do with these cycles as it does hydrocarbons. If the earth did not have cycles, then can someone tell me why there have been multiple ice ages? I do however believe, that as a people, we are not innocent in global warming, but we are not the soul contributors to it. We are helping to speed it up, but one way or another, it is inevitable.

        Thanks Ray

Hopefully the City continues to be as organized as they are now when it comes to the recovery. There is a lot of damage. I'm unhappy because I can't go home but at least I still have a home. Many people lost everything. Some areas of Alberta have been devastated. Hopefully Medicine Hat gets through it OK.

Of course the weather goes through cycles, that is predictable and natural. What we have done (yes WE) is to change the actual climate patterns. The atmosphere just passed the threshold of CO2 particles not seen in 400,000 years. Global warming is a fact. The planet is heating up at an alarming rate which is causing extreme cold in some places and extreme heat in others. The notion that we are merely only now hearing about it does not mean it does not exist, or that it existed before and we simply didn't know. Wind currents which were previously somewhat predictable have become erratic. The leading scientific studies show that it is now basically irreversable. The planet was heating naturally, but the burning of carbon on such a scale has made it that much faster.
I'll be dead before Miami sinks, but sink it will.
Unfortunately, in the case of global warming, we have been something really special.
That said my heart goes out to all of my fellow Canadians in Alberta. My smugness won't make their homes come back.
I just get riled when I see anyone saying we as a species had nothing to do with it.
We've made it worse, and we should be doing whatever we can to at least try and slow it down.
