Yes but kids these days do stuff just for a lark or to make people squirm, they just love it.
You say they were with a group of people, what is that many people going to do with $20.
At best that will get you one hit if you are on drugs, there is alot better ways to get $20 than to hit up people in Subway.

Two I remember the most:
