  • Snowboarding BC 2016

I recently was in Alberta-BC and decided to hit the slopes for a third year. People have asked me about the conditions and how it went, so I have decided to share some of my GoPro moments.

Fernie after 25cm of snow. Linda's Run.
    https://youtu.be/u9COt2ZnJig

Fernie Timber Bowl. Trees were absolutely caked with snow.
    https://youtu.be/EqeaIknLya8

Panorama Extreme Dream Zone. A beautiful run with incredible views, starts above the clouds, through double black runs Trigger, Elmo, Orca and Dunes before dropping into and below the clouds. Lots of trees and my camera takes a few hits.

After skiing out west, I am extremely picky about the hills I ski on the East Coast. Tremblant, Massif, St. Anne in Quebec. I pretty much only ski Tremblant and Jay Peak out here. Other stuff is decent but much too far. El Nino has pretty much killed the season on the east coast

Funny that you should say that. My first day at Fernie my GoPro took a hit and somehow ended up pointing down at my feet. I got this good footage of my footwork through the powder, and I had put it into slow-mo.

            Ahhh fresh powder!

Nice slo mo! What kind of stick do you ride? (excuse the obvious pun)

            Re: The east

Tremblant is always FREEZING! I want to try Vermont. Never been.

Alas! No GoPro back in the day. Hard to mount a Betacam on a toque! Still vivid memories though. Fernie, Rossland, Whitewater -Nelson, Panorama, Revelstoke, best powder skiing anywhere aside from heli-skiing.

I ride a Sims 157. I get the float I need in powder. I might be adding another board to my quiver. Looking at something with Camber not rocker, good pop, light without being too flexible.

The trick to Tremblant is proper layers. As in lots. The hill is cold, the lifts are directly in the wind, and -25 to -40 is common at Tremblant. Jay Peak is good due to the "Jay Cloud". Like Fernie out west Jay gets more snow than anyone. Like fernie, it can rain there....recently my weather reports gave me flood warning for Jay. Stowe, SugarBush and White Face are out hills that are fun. Massif in the Quebec City area is good if you enjoy steeps, lots of blacks and double blacks and tons of off piste stuff.

My gear setup is a little....high tech. I run dual Gopro's a Hero 4 Silver shooting at 4k, and I have a backup Session. My iPhone pairs with my Gopro and with my Goggles. I use a pair of Oakley Airwaves. The Goggles themselves have a heads up display. They also have GPS and download the trail map of every hill I go to. Once I hit "Start Day" it tracks everything. The runs I do, what type and percentage, my speed, altitude, vertical drop, jumps, max air time, etc. They also remove the need to really touch any tech. They control my Gopro so you don't have to worry about the camera being on, as well as control my music. You will probably notice me playing with a wrist remote in some of the videos. That's the control for the entire system that comes with the Goggles.

Shyla, Great vids. Impressive Fernie clouds runs - I'd have trouble keeping up on those double black.

That cloud run is at Panorama. I find Pano has much harder runs, and a lot of tree runs which I love. The groomers at pano are great.

Crag is an appropriate name for a mountainman, especially coupled with Rockheart. Probably no coincidence.
