A Shemale looks like and lives like a woman. In essence, THINKS she's a woman, except of course, PHYSICALLY, her anatomy is male.

ladyboy is a term that refers to your garden variety Asians who fit the above criteria.

A Transvestite, or crossdresser, is a male oriented personality who presents themselves as a female (clothes, makeup, wigs, etc., to varying degrees), usually as a fetish, or sometimes fully demented.

A Transsexual is a male who has undergone surgical sexual reassignment, including female hormones, breast implants, penis/scrotum to vagina/clitoris surgery, etc., and lives as a woman. A shemale doesn't necessarily want this as a goal, even though technically classified "pre-op".

A tranny allows your engine to turn the driveshaft of your car.

There's folks who might disagree with the above as there are gray psycho-sexual areas between the groups, but suffice it to say, that's a good basic explanation to hopefully get you started down your merry path to buggery most foul!!
