however taking his car on the spot and issuing a fine of $2000-10000 is over kill. Since when have the Police become Judge, jury and executioner?

They don't, thats what the court date is for. The Judge will determine the amount of the fine. The police only arrest and detain.
Now being a LEO, I've gots to ask, Wheres the fire at buddy? LoL If anybody should know better, ......

I cant believe you ppl. A NY cop comes to Canada and gets caught up in a NEW law put out there from uncle Dalty. I got news for you, that law has been on the books forever, its just been spruced up. I know because a friend of mine was hit with the charge back in the 60''s. The law then was 30 mph over the speed limit. As a cop you know the rules and you know the outcome if you break them. Just be glad it wasnt the other way around, a Canadian caught in NY state. Over there the Canadian is thrown in jail until he pays the bail or he sits in jail waiting for his court date. I do a lot of driving and see drivers like you all the time. There are to many cars on the road today to be driving like that. Set your cruise at 18 k over the limit and the OPP will never bother you as long as your not verring in and out of traffic. As for anyone who wants to tallk anymore about polictics or speeding tickets, thats two doors down, check the sign that says vacant elevator shaft. This is for talking about the gurls.

Yes the guy was in the wrong, he shouldn't have been speeding however taking his car on the spot and issuing a fine of $2000-10000 is over kill. Since when have the Police become Judge, jury and executioner?

I also highly doubt that because he was a NY cop he knew about Ontario's new law.

No one on the 401 drives at 100km/hr unless it is rush hour. Try it one day and see how many dirty looks you get, honks and the finger. You will be holding up the flow of traffic if you do.

A study was undertaken by the University of Toronto on speed & speed & accidents. It came to the conclusion that despite the rhetoric, speed doesn't kill. Further it recommended that the speed limit on the 400 series highways be increased to 130 km/hr.

This law was implemented as a blatant tax grab and as a knee jerk reaction to the public outcry about two Toronto men who were racing, crashed and killed someone then were found not guilty. The boys were wealthy and hired some hot shot lawyers who convinced the Judge that they weren't technically guilty of racing as it is defined by the law. These were two kids who were recklessly racing on inner Toronto streets during the day. This is completely differently from the guy who takes an uncrowded 401 from Toronto to Montreal on a Tuesday and drives consistently at 150km/hr for his journey.

Canada has the world's second largest land mass and one of the lowest ratios of population to land mass of any nation on earth. So it isn't surprising that we exceed our rigid speed limits on sparsely populated highways as we drive 1000's of kilometres from city to city.

i agree 100 percent if someome does 100 in the left lane and holds me up im all over there bumber on the horn and flashing my lights then once i get infront i jamm my brakes on till they move into the middle lane,i drive always in the left lane about 130 to 140 everyday and have no patience for assholes who hold me up.

They take your car and driver's license away on the spot. That means the Cop is determining guilt and punishment on the spot. The Judge can find you not guilty at a later date, so you won't have to pay a fine, but they can't undo the inconvenience and the cost of losing your license and car.

Personally I haven't had a speeding ticket in 10 years but I believe this law is excessive and unwarranted.

Yes Julian Fantino (OPP Commissioner) was quoted as saying they can grab your car for unsafe lane changes and not driving to suit the conditions. It certainly gives the Police incredible power which I am sure they will abuse. Welcome to McGuinty's Canuckistan.
