  • Question regarding HRT/Ceasing Blockers (Androcur)

Was just wondering if anybody that might be knowledgeable regarding HRT knows whether its normal that my doctor stopped prescribing me blockers today as apparently I've been on them too long and my T levels are low enough so that I supposedly don't need them. I was taking a 1/4 of a 50mg Androcur a day, like 12.5mg and last time levels were checked T was at 0.9 and and she said under two is fine and that its to minimize long term effects and stuff. My next appointment is in six months and although I do have some saved up , maybe for a couple months, wondering if I should keep taking them or is it good to stop, is it normal for a pre-op ts not to use blockers? Google search just confuses me, too many answers, not all the same , sometimes not even the same subject as the question

    Thank you.

Thanks for taking the time to answer and give me some council, sometimes its hard to understand all this stuff and know what's best. I can only hope my doctor does.

I agree I am getting older and I must not be producing much and am atrophied, I think I'm asexual now, I have zero libido, but I only told my doctor that after she had talked to me about stopping blockers when she asked me if I wanted to get tested for sti's and I said its been like 10 months no sex. But maybe stopping blockers will help for that, idk.

I do feel like listening to my doctor but I definitely am worried about hormonal imbalance, I think it was about a year and a half ago I was at 520-sumthing Estrogen and within 6 months I had dropped to 198 due to bad habits (not eating+drugs) But now its been since Xmas 2018 I'm clean

Last time I had my levels checked in July , E levels had gone up a bit and t levels were low , but now without blockers it worries me it will mess me up, especially since I've been on estradiol derm patches instead of pills for a couple months now and seeing really good effects like my breasts are really sore for the first time ever especially nipples, a good sore, and they've grown by 15% or so in the last month and I feel generally more motivated and less depressed and crazy, so ya definitely worried about another imbalance.

The older you get your testosterone levels will naturally subside, for one thing.
On top of that, if you have been on blockers for quite some time, chances are, your hormonal glands will be atrophied and not producing much anyway.
Like anything if you don't use it, you lose it. Probably no need to suppress something that is permanently suppressed.
Body builders that take alot of testosterone have this problem, their body just stops making it because they already inject lots.
Overtime they can lose much of the capacity to make their own testosterone.

I know from experience with TS that hormones going off balance can cause many issues.
Everyone needs some of both E and T to be healthy. T promote bone and tissue growth.
I know from experience that low E can cause problems too, like balance and other important things that are not gender related.

One post op that i lived with was on the usual Estrogen and such, but also prescribed small amounts of T for health and sex drive because after the surgery she had absolutely none.

    Everyone is different.
    Listen to you doctor.

Hopefully not but like I said my e levels had dropped drastically a while back and are still not at the levels they were at before that so now without blockers if I do follow doctors orders I hope it wont mix everything up.

I find this stranger considering I have a friend who is post op and she is in her 50’s and she is still on blockers & shes been on Spironolactone & Finasteride since 2014..

I’m on both those blockers for the last 2 years & I have my levels monitored every 6 months, my endocrinologist works with a lot of trans people and she never mentioned a limit to taking them, she did say that if someone is going to have issues they will arise within the first year, but if your levels are low that is what you want so I’m not sure why your doctor would suggest you stop taking them, my levels are very low like 0.2-0.4 and I still take them.

The only time I was told to go off hormones was if I was going to have any type of surgery and for only two weeks before and then can go back on them after surgery.

P.S - I’m also on patches and my breast growth has been pretty good also, I’m a B34 & I’m only 2 years on HRT, my endo told me they will grow for up to 5 years so thats why I’m waiting to decide on implants if I can get to a C cup naturally I will be happy.

Ya i do find it kind of strange too, since im pre-op, and my doctor's a generalist and not a endocrinoligist , idk she said "They" had talked about it alot, whoever they is, and that they think it's best to stop them because i've been on them for over 5 years and it does seem to be hard on the liver and such from what i've read. Apparently its not supposed to be for more than 3 years on androcur as after that a ts should get vaginoplasty or Orchidectomy, but sometimes that's just not possible within that time frame.

But the thing is i'm the one that lives with the consequences and side effects, not them. Wish I had of gone to med school just to be able to understand all this stuff.

Guess I'll count my stash and see how long i got for, anyone got blockers for sale in case?

A B34 is already a lovely and proportionate size in my opinion, but I hope for you you make it to a C if that's what you want.
I do find patches are more effective for me anyways, and hopefully I'll make it to a A cup lol, that will be just fine for be

I?d suggest you try to find a endocrinologist who has experience working with trans patients regularly and ask for a referral to them, if your doctor asks why just tell them because you want a second opinion.

If that type of blocker is bad for you maybe ask your endo if you can switch to Spironolactone or a different type. There are other options than just cutting you off them.

I understand it might be bad for your liver on long periods but thats something that should be checked regularly anyways with all the bloodwork so your doctor should know if it is harming your liver levels or not already.

Counted my stash, 124 x 50mg Androcur, and 60 x 25mg Spiro. Plus lots of progesterone and lupin estradiol. Should be good to last for a bit at least

crag & kylie have both given good advice, listen to your doctor and find an endocrinologist.
my gf (post op) tells me the t-blockers have side effects with lonterm usage, that prolly why your gp got you to stop. And if your t levels are already low, they become redundant.

btw, kylie your breast are perfect as they are!

Well I haven't taken any since my appointment monday, so far don't feel any difference, no body hair growth or some stupid testosterone stuff like that. But I'm still not sure, i dont really know how to get an endo and i hate meeting new ppl lol and anyways I hope i'll be post op in the near future, not sure how long it takes once I get both letters but that should defeat the demon T once and for all!
