I never shut up, so sounding like a girl is a must. I have a friend who specializes in rehabilitative speech language pathology.

Its about compressing the vocal chords and then opening them back up. Like that azn girl in the video said, add some of your male voice into your female voice. Other wise you are going to strain you vocal chords which could result in sleep apnea, and even make your voice deeper.

Another thing I had a problem with: chronic heart burn, stomach acid eats deteriorates your vocal chords. With out treatment I would not be able to laugh, and would have deepened my voice.
Instead of a sweet sounding voice I would have had a low scratchy voice.

Thanks, I appreciate that - in all honesty, my pitch just naturally falls in the normal feminine range. So I've been lucky that I haven't had to alter it excessively, I just use the upper range of my normal voice.

It's funny that a lot of girls think their voice has to be high to be feminine. In reality, the normal masculine range is from 100 to 145 Hz, while the normal feminine range is from around 165 to 220 Hz. There's 20 Hz of overlap in between, but there are countless exceptions that fall outside the normal range for one's gender. Cher and Jodie Foster are two notable examples.

Even though my own levels are consistently within the 150-190 Hz range, there are several other factors that differentiate masculine and feminine voices - resonance and intonation being top of the list. Male voices tend to have that "rumbling" sound, and female voices tend to use a lot more inflection in sentances. Male voices tend to be monotonous, and men increase volume to stress a point, while female voices use the entire range of their tone, and increase pitch when trying to emphasize something.

Of course, practice makes perfect - I'm one of those people who never really shuts up, and that's given me ample opportunity to work on my voice. But sounding too practiced, or too fake, can also be a dead giveaway - so the best idea is to soften your own voice, and just use the high end of your own natural range.

FYI: For anyone receiving health care at the Sherbourne Health Centre, they're currently running a pilot project with a speech pathologist from St. Joseph's hospital. If things work out, the SHC will hopefully start offering vocal training by the end of the year.
