  • Gettin' off on the TTC.

Is this story true? I'll explain later.

This goes out to everyone and it's to show that you are not alone in the ways you think. It's a story that is TOTALLY not like something Rantsalot would post. You know what? Good. I've been told I'm a little conservative at times and PC among other things. Perhaps its time I reconsider how and what I post in the near future, especially here.

So a friend of mine Pete tells me he was on the TTC subway heading to Ossington then suddenly *snapping fingers* there was a city wide power outage. From what he told me the train started to weave back and forth crazily and it was pitch dark in the subway car he was in. He said that at one point the train felt like it was tilting off the track. I think Pete assumed that because from what he told me in a situation like that the driver has to use a manual override to take control of the train but because of what happened my friend guesses the driver coudn't see the course ahead of him and misjudged where he had to manually brake causing that whole train to shake like it did.

Anyways . Pete decides it's all over and he whips it out. What do I mean whips it out? I asked the same question. "Pete, dude what do you mean you whipped it out?" Yes everyone, it IS what you're thinking. He whipped it out and said he started beating it right there. Imagine all this happening while he's in the dark and the subways car is bouncing around.

Well , after a few seconds another passenger who hears what he's doing takes a cue from him. I asked Pete " How do you know someone else was doing the same thing you were?" and he said " Man, I could hear it." To continue Pete said some other guy decides to whip it out and start beating like mad and then shortly after that a woman until eventually almost everyone starts beating and playing. I guess if you are plummeting to certain doom what a better way to go. Myself I'd be more like "How the hell am I going to survive!!" So Pete goes on about this and says that eventually the train was slowing down and such and he says all this without a smirk , quite the opposite, it was almost like an embarrassed look.

Ahh now here's the end of the story which makes it even more strange. Pete says after a minute or so suddenly *snapping fingers again* the power came back. The lights are on, the train starts to move again at its normal speed and rights itself and everyone is looking around and screaming at what others were doing and VERY quickly put their pieces or whatever away and deboard when finally reaching the stop. Nobody looks at anyone or says anything to anyone about this phenomena while leaving the station.

Didn't I see that happen on Monty Python once?

        Uh no.

Please explain to me how a power outage is going to cause a subway car to come off the rails.

Cliff. Good question. When the power goes out the subway doesn't come to a complete stop and it takes time to slow down.

With the power gone and not being able to brake properly you are not going to be able to brake properly around a corner, the subway car would tilt and shake.

Think of it as if you were driving a car and cutting a corner to sharp.

The subway trains could still run for few hrs or so even with a power outage as they have a # of rescources they draw power from, the reason they dont continue when theres a power outage at stations is because of the ventilation system,a power outage is not going to affect the drivers ability to guide the trains xoxo

In pitch black with no lights? Are you sure?

Trains rely on hydrolics for brakes, not electricity, it's always been like this so that if there is a power outage the trains can be stopped immdiately. (The outage takes out the tack signals and the points meaning all the trains must be stopped as soon as possable to avoid an accident.) There's only one train in the world that uses any form of electricity to brake and that's the brand new super fast TGV in France that has direct feed motors to its wheels which can be reversed to provide drag/friction and generate electricity at the same time (Ok two, the japanese bullet train uses electricity to generate it magnetic field which is reversed to slow it down).

Using electiricty to brake is also a bad idea because braking creates heat that will feed back through the assembly to the solanoid/motor and push up it's resistance, lowering it's ability to conduct electricity and thus it's ability to actually brake where as if you heat hydrolic fluid you only increase the pressure making the brakes more effective.

Of all the various elements of this story I think it's funny that people are calling bullshit on the physics and the mechanics of the train but no one has mentioned anything about the alleged case of contagious masturbation.
