  • Horror Review, "The Human Centipede", by Tonia Lee Ann

If your anything like me, you enjoy scarring your mind with brutal horror films. In the past decade, we have seen this "evolution" of extremity movies such as "Hostel" or "Saw". From a cultural perspective comes even fore ferocious films of the Genre. Paving the way was Japanese horror such as "The Audition" and French films such as "Martyrs". They blend in with our movie making in a way that makes one question, "What is next? Could this get any worse?"
Originality is a factor of film making and, in many ways, more important to horror direction and writing. When something loses its shock value, another title is sure to come into play trying to change the stakes or up the gore. What we find is that gore alone is not horror.
Art direction comes at a cost.

A few good movies did in fact surface, however. These films have much to offer in presentation and story telling. The concept is reasonable and believable to an extent, making them all the bit more horrid to behold. So, when a title comes out... your girl, Tonia Lee, is the first to watch and report.

This being said, I had the chance to sit down with the talked about movie, "The Human Centipede."
Before I give away the "plot", I need to make it clear that this movie is so fucking awful, I can't believe I fell into the gimmick before it was released. When I first got a taste of the concept, I was one of the first to say that this movie would be the scariest movie since the Exorcist. I was wrong.

Three people are kidnapped by a doctor in Germany who is world renowned for separating conjoined twins. Two of them are young girls and the other is a Japanese man. The doctor had three dogs that passed away after he joined them in a surgical procedure that defies all levels of morality and sanity. Basically, he make a centipede dog.
He loved his centipede dog but it died a slow death so he gets the idea to make a three part human with the same surgery.
The mad doctor is supposed to be scary in this movie but... he is likable and funny. This was not the way they wanted to present him but when you see him acting like Dr. Frankenstein, training his "manapede" with a newspaper and taking pictures of it, you will laugh so hard. He has this dry voice with this neo-nazi sadistic personality. He is in no way a scary element. He could have been... if they TRIED.

How does he join them? The fucking gastric system. He cuts up your ass and mouth and joins them. In one example, he is (so help me God) illustrating this surgery to his three victims. He shows how he pulls the entrails out and grafts it to the throat. The directer boasts this movie to be 100% medically true and possible.
At first you are unnerved. I was like, "Holy fucking shit! This is so messed up." However, once you ask some basic questions... it's really stupid. Not even remotely possible.
I would say that this is the only scary scene in this movie. It was pretty intense and I liked his display of "glee" as he illustrated it. Once the scene ends and you get to see his human centipede, it loses every bit of credibility and horror. All you see is three people crawling around whimpering because the are grafted onto this guys ass hole.
    LOL
This is just what it is, a gimmick. If you don't fall for it, it becomes funny. Posts on chan boards talk about joining hamsters or making a "fagapede.".

The trailer delivers, though. If you see the trailer, you think this movie is shocking and scary.

Conclusion? With the great horror movies of the decade, this is not one of them.
The movie is bad on every level. It does not scare you and when it is over, you will wonder just why you watched people joined ass to mouth.
    The movie sucked ass. Oh...
Oh LOL I get it! Now I understand the plot.
The movie was about how much it sucked ass. Me, the person watching the film is the end of the centipede, the person in the middle is the movie production and content while the head of the centipede is the director.
    Wow, they really got me.

I should also mention the sheer stupidity of the characters in this movie. With no spoiler, even the police are borderline OCD.

It;s been a while since I have seen a horror movie that was scary. I've seen Martyrs at work a few times but just brushed it off.

Still ... in my opinion, the best horror movie ever made was the ORIGINAL 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Manages to freak the audience out (even by today's standards) without too much gore. A real classic.

I'll have to check that one out, love a good, dumb, cheesy movie. Some of my favorite horror movies right now are.

Dog Soldiers - Great werewolf movie.
            High Tension
Frontier(s) - If you like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, give this movie a try.
Let the right one in - Good twist on a vampire film.
            Inside - Wow...
The Thing - A true classic for me.
Audition - This movie is so well made, everything leads to a crazy climax.
            REC.
            Descent
Teeth - Not a true horror movie, but a great film, very funny, and bloody.

That's my favorite film of the genre.

The reason being, it holds nothing back. It's a brutal display of torture, murder and guilt. It just has this way of attacking your mind. The story is so well presented, you get half way through and it becomes an even more vicious animal. At the end, you are left questioning life after death when the film had begun as a kind of mind-fuck thriller/horror. The acting is so good, the score is deeply unnerving and the whole concept just fucks with you for a long time.
It's so great to see good horror.

The Human Centipede is just an example of using shock and nothing else. All it does is take a concept that will bother you and show you about 90 minutes of it. If you take away the "root" of the concept, you have a stupid premise with an even more stupid fucking ending.

Martyrs was shocking. The most talked about scene (the flaying) is considered the most gut wrenching scene in horror since the crucifix masturbation scene in the Exorcist.
It's along the same lines of, "I can't believe I just saw that."
The Human Centipede TRIED to make that happen as you see how the doctors "pet" eats and digests food. All I did was sip coffee and think, "This is the point of this movie... to see this happen...", and it's really kind of expected.

From the trailer, Martyrs looks eye widening intense. I'm assuming there are subtitles on the dvd for my un-bilingual ass. I'll price it out when i get to work, should be under 10$. I'll give it a watch. There have been a few horror movies I've watched where you're sitting there and all you can wonder is ....really? Ughh damn impulse movie purchases

I saw a trailer for REC before a movie I watched last week..I know they remade it as Quarentine, but based on trailers the original looks much more appealing.

Well, removing the lining of flesh that holds the anus in place, pulling it out far enough to be grafted into the throat... and than stitched to the ass!

It is. It wasn't really meant to be shock for the sake of shock, though. Some parts of it are more visceral in theory rather than example in this.
Critics did not share the same opinion. Just as with the Human Centipede.
I had read reviews that regarded the Human Centipede as "groundbreaking" and "worth viewing". Maybe... they are simply scat buffs rather than horror buffs. I would imagine this is the case considering HOW BAD THE MOVIE IS.
Some critics reviewed Martyrs as a terrible film. Many more suggest that the writer and director simply wanted to make the worst torture porn he could.
Here is a parody that directly insults the writer.

Naw, the remake was just a big budget gorefest with no surprises. The original kept you guessing, while dropping a hint here and there until the last 15 minutes when everything comes together. Plus it was made by Toby Hooper (Poltergeist).

I watched both Hostel and Hostel 2(hostel 2 I was the only person in the theatre. I felt a little creepy), but by no means were they the horror classics that some people make them out to be. Throwing in a boat load of blood, and some gruesome deaths in my mind aren't going to make a movie scary. Same thing when someone says a movie like the Grudge is scary. Why was it scary because of the overused quick cuts, and screams? Bah...I feel like an old man wanting to tell kids about the good ol days of horror movies

I am intrigued by Martyrs though(even after the parody haha).
