  • "Hiyas ng Pilipinas" (Jewel of the Philippines) - Canada.. a TV/TS Pageant

I'd like to invite everyone to an all-Filipino TV/TS Beauty & Personality Pageant on Friday, November 11th, 2005. The event will be held at the Korean Cultural Centre at 1133 Leslie Street (Eglinton East on Leslie), Toronto and will start at 7:00pm. There are nine (confirmed) finalists joining in this fund raising event. The tickets are $15.00 and proceeds are intended for two non-profit organizations - one in Toronto and the other for a home for the disabled in the Philippines.

If you are interested to watch and purchase tickets to this event, you may contact me and you could go to Remingtons during the T-girl Tuesdays where I will have tickets for you. You may also just show up at the door and purchase the tickets there although the organizers cannot guarantee if there will still be seats available by then.

We are trying to make this event fun and worthy of your time and for you to see lots of new faces that are either in the pageant or part of the audience. Besides, this is for a good cause and I think $15.00 is not too much to spare for a wholesome event like this.

I hope to see all of you there.

Doesn't this request go against the general idea of a FUNDRAISER? For $15, you get a nice evening with some smokin' hot transsexual girls from the Phillippines. That's a bargain! If I could be in TO that night, I'd go and bring some buddies too.

This seems like a great idea Karen. Pageants are always a fun and entertaining way to educate the masses about the Transgender spectrum.
You may want to post pictures of the contestants to show the T-Girl lovers who will be appearing, and point out who is TV, TS or Drag Queen.
I have found in the past that this helps create a buzz.
When we held the "Miss Shemale World Pageant" we used the domain name missshemaleworld.com and posted the contestants photos and background. All the contestants where Transsexual so not to confuse our admirers. But this does not always have to be the case in Pageants, variety is interesting also.
The website and the information provided by the website, helped with publicity and educated people on who we where.
The Miss Shemale World domain now points to Lady...plus, incase we ever decide to hold the pageant again.
Just a couple of thoughts that may help with the promotion. "A picture speaks a thousand words" after all.
You still have time to take the contestants photos, I am sure you will be having a rehearsal sometime. You could even post them on this board, instead of the expense of a separate Domain.

I would also like to suggest providing the names, addresses, phone numbers and/or websites of the Charities you are raising money for.
For those of us who are unable to attend the Pageant, and may want to make a contribution.
This will help you to raise more funds for the Charities you are raising the money for.
You could post that information on the board also, for the visitors here to find the contact them easily.

I wish you lots of luck with your wholesome event. And I am sure that all generous donations will be appreciated by both of your caring Charities

                Amanda

Hello Amanda, it’s good to hear again from you and I’m grateful that you being one of the so-called leaders and popular figure in the transsexual community here Toronto are having some interests in this fundraising event.

I would just like to point out that I am not the producer of this pageant but I could let the board know why I am trying to help this fundraising event. I understand, of course for people or the public at large to be inquisitive when fundraisers are being held, as to where the moneys raised are for, etc. I, for one, whether I am contributing or not would not hesitate to raise questions as to where the proceeds of a fundraiser would go, how reputable the organizations and the people in that organizations are in the community and most of all, the accountability issues that have to be addressed thereafter. As an accountant (I still do accounting and bookkeeping work on the side) and somebody who has an extensive experience in community organizing and activism both in Canada and in the Philippines, I should have a crystal clear idea of who and where I am involving myself with especially when financial matters are involved.

Part of the proceeds will go to the Silayan Community Centre, a registered Filipino community organization (www.silayan.org) that has been in existence since the 1960’s. Currently, I am one of the members of the Board of Directors of this organization and am instrumental in establishing the newly created committee that focuses on the issues and concerns of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transsexuals (especially), particularly within the Filipino-Canadian community. This is one of the volunteer work that I do and I’m very pleased with how this organization has become responsive to the needs of the community especially within the St. Jamestown (Downtown) area and trying to maximize what we could do in spite of the meager budget that we have.

The greater bulk of the proceeds will be used to purchase at least twenty wheelchairs (minimum) for the home for the disabled (“Tahanang Walang Hagdan”) in Manila, Philippines duly registered with the securities commission in the said country.

The major sponsors of this event are the Philippine Airlines, the Philippine Department of Tourism, the City of Manila, Shangri-La Hotel in the Philippines and other Filipino-owned business establishments here in Toronto and is produced by The Philippine Variety (a grocery store based in St. Jamestown) in partnership with a filipino newspaper, both of which are based here in Toronto.

I’m sure people are also curious of who they are going to see in the pageant. Since this is a public event, I took the liberty of announcing the names of who will be there (aside from myself… and yes, I am one of the finalists) competing for the title. They are Charmaine (Vodka). Santita, Jenny (Tanya), Maricar (she is new ts in the scene), and two other young and new ts’s and one transvestite/crossdresser, (and no, unfortunately there are no drag queen contestants which I personally would have been happy to see so as to see the variety of transgenderism). All of the contestants believe in the purpose of this fundraiser and are willing to help and contribute for its success. (Gosh, with the mention of all these “young breed of Filipino ts’s”, I now feel so old. LOL…).

The prizes are pretty exciting, too. Among others, these include a round trip ticket to the Philippines for the four winners for the purpose of turning over the wheelchairs to the said home for the physically challenged people in Manila and also for few days in the fine and white beaches of Boracay which was once voted as the best beach in the world by a european organization. It’s not only the prizes that excite me to join this pageant but moreso, for the purposes of which this fundraiser is for.

I hope this has satisfied the curiousity of the people who have some questions about this fundraising event and most especially Amanda (thanks once again for asking). If you still have more questions, it’s better if you would just come to the event though being my former boss, I understand how busy you are with your business. If you could be there, the producers should be able to provide you the answers if there are still some doubts in your mind. Not only will you be amazed with what you see but also able to help those who deserve such help and become a better citizen of the world. With due respect, I acknowledge the good things you have done to the transsexual community and in that regard, I am very proud of you.

Thank you very much and I hope there will be lots of good-hearts people who will be able to make it to the "Hiyas ng Pilipinas" pageant.

Thanks, Amanda... I hope so, too and furthermore, I was just trying to answer your very valid question and somehow satisfy your doubts and/or curiousity. ;-) Most importantly, I hope I have convinced you into coming to this event. Your $15.00 (or $20.00 when ticket is purchases at the door) will go a long way into helping the less fortunate sisters and brothers we have, not only in Canada but in the other part of the world.

But if you can't, I will always understand.

Re: "Hiyas ng Pilipinas" ewel of the Philippines) - Canada.. a TV/TS Pageant

It's great to see how people have been reacting to this fundraising event - both in the public board and those who sent me personal messages and e-mails. Thank you very much of your enthusiasm to not only see the exciting new faces who will be there at the pageant but for your good intentions to help. In behalf of the organizers of this pageant, I thank you all and am feeling overwhelmed with your responses.

I feel hesitant (and somewhat embarassed) of doing this thus this info have come a little late but there is another fundraiser this Saturday, November 5, 2005 from 7:00 pm to 12:am to be held at Best Western Primrose Hotel at 111 Carlton St (West of Jarvis St.). This is an activity initiated by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual & Queer (LGBTQ) Committee of Silayan Community Centre. As you know, this new committee has $0 (zero) budget and this is the first time for us since the establishing of this committee to do a fundraiser after planning this in the summer. We, the officers in the organization have to shell out some money from our pockets just to make a downpayment for the venue for this event. (Sorry for telling you this internal matter guys, but this is the truth about running and establishing new program in an organization that is not funded). The tickets are $20.00 and that includes a light dinner and entertainment.

The fundraiser is called "Barong at Saya", these are the national and traditional costumes of men and women in the Philippines though the participants don't have to be wearing them. But for those who could, there will be a selection of the best of the two costumes and some awards for the winners, not too much but a small token for presenting the best of our traditional costumes. There will also be entertainment numbers (lip synch) by Krista and another DQ performer named Labelle from Mississauga, dances from the Hola Group, a group of crossdressers and other presentations from other volunteers within the filipino LGBTQ community. Also on this night will be the presentation of the finalists of Hiyas ng Pilipinas pageant so for those who will make it will have a good view of who will be finalists.

I will be right at the entrance as one of the usherettes so if ever some of you can be there, don't hesitate to introduce yourself or at least say "Hi..." and that you got the info from tg forums. As I said above, I was not about to make an announcement of this fundraiser but I am just encouraged by the interest of a number of people who are asking for information and extending their best wishes including the admin of this board, for the pageant. I have to caution you though that the number of transsexuals attending will not be a many as those who will be in the pageant in case you go there to see transsexuals. I just want to make sure that you won't get bored or expecting a great number of us to be there.

About the website of Silayan (www.silayan.org), I spoke to our Executive Director and I found out that the volunteer doing the website is in the process of re-doing it and making it a little more appealing to the viewers. As to when would this be done and available, I don't know yet as of now. It's hard to be pressuring a volunteer but we do have timelines and the person is doing his best to finish it soon. So, my apologies on that.

If you want some more information about this particular fundraiser, you may contact the Sialyan Community Centre and here is the address and contact person at the office:

                      Ms. Gene Lara, Executive Director
                      Silayan Community Centre
240 Welesley Streeat East, Level 2

                      Telephone # 416 926 9505

Donations are greatly appreciated and if you do, please make it specific that it is intended for the LGBTQ Committee of the centre so that the funds or the good donated will rightly go to the planned programs of the said committee. Please address all donations to the the Silayan Community Centre. A tax deductible receipt will be issued for monetary donations and you can bitch me here if you won't have it before the end of the tax season.

                      Thank you very much.

                      Karen

P.S. I promise this will be the last fundraising announcement I will be posting in this board this year. Gosh, I hate doing this but then again, if there are some of you who have some extra cash, no matter how small, why not give it to a good cause? There ARE issues about transsexuals being harassed and whose rights are being violated right here in Toronto and most of us just keep our silence out of fear and embarassment. Some of us are even getting murdered! We need to get empowered and the best way to do it is to organize and educate and this is what we are doing at the new Silayan Community Centre.

For those who did not make it to the show, I would proudly let you know that I took home the crown and was also the unanimous choice by the seven judges to win all the major awards - for national costume, the swimwear and the long gown.

I was there to support Karen in the contest and she did an amazing job.
Her outfits were incredible and she was really well spoken and beautiful.

This was a "real" beauty pageant with entertainment, choreography and works.
Just like you would expect of a "straight" pageant.
A great job was done by all to put this on and every girl in the contest was stunning.

The only bad thing is I forgot to bring my camera.
Congrats to all involved, well done.
