  • THE FEDERAL ELECTION

Monday, January 23rd is Election Day. I would just like to remind everyone to exercise one of the most sacred privilege and right every Canadian has in this country to determine our role in forming a government that we want. As for my transgendered sisters, it is very important that we won’t forget to go to our designated polling booths where we could vote for the candidate whom we deem could affect advantageously our way of life. I said privilege because we sometimes forget that not all people in the world have the opportunity to exercise this sacred right in a very clean, honest and democratic way.

I know some people are not that political and some are somewhat discouraged with the way some politicians have governed this country, that some have thought her or his single vote won’t matter in the overall outcome. But these are all false beliefs, in my opinion. We have to know that that single vote we would cast is the very vote that could determine the overall results in this election. We have to make our voices heard one ballot at a time. Politics is there to create order and whether we like it or not, we are part of it and greatly affected by it. If we think something is wrong with the government, it is not because of politics but it is due to some politicians who are protecting their vested interests at the detriment of the interests of the many among us. It is our role on Monday to weed out those who we think is giving politics a bad name and vote for those who we believe could protect our rights and interests as a distinct minority grouping.

I am currently helping the campaign of my local NDP candidate in my riding of Toronto Centre and it doesn’t matter what political leanings and beliefs we have and who are we going to vote for. The essential thing is we exercise our right and help determine the future of this GREATEST country earth.

Let us not be witnesses of history in the making. Let us be active, critical and analytical participants in the making of a government that we want.

On Monday, January 23rd 2005, let us all go out and have our voices heard!

          Re: THE FEDERAL ELECTION

I have always been an advocate of less government, less tax and more individual choice. For that reason, I will excercise my right to vote Conservative on January 23rd. I am a proud Canadian who has never squandered an opportunity to vote. For those of you out there that can't be bothered, or don't think that it is important to vote, then, you have no right to complain about the government that you get. Our polictical parties are as diverse as our population. That old saw that "there all the same" is bullshit. It is very important to weed crime and corruption out of our government, making it even more important than ever to vote on Monday.

                Exactly.

It always amazes me, the ones that start bitching and complaining about the new government invariably turn out to be the ones that didn't bother to vote; when asked by phone in radio talk show hosts. If you can't be bothered to vote then you have no right to complain afterwards.

One other new tidbit that can be used to quell the issue of "my one vote doesn't count for anything"; starting this year each party receives $1.75 per vote per year until the next election. Now some will scoff that that doesn't amount to very much. That may be true when looked at a single vote but when taken in context of how many other people say the same thing it becomes huge. What if there were 1,000 voters that had the same reason for not bothering to vote and they were all going to vote for the same party albeit in different ridings across the country. That now accounts for $1,750 per year for that party until the next election, which could be up to 5 years from now so that could turn out to be $8,750 which is nothing to sneeze at. So even if your candidate in your riding doesn't get elected, your vote will still go towards helping the party itself.

What? How old are you Rick? Wasn't it just yersterday that PC party butt fucked us with a 7% GST! Not to mention the Free trade agreement with the US that has turned this country into Mexico North, and the fucking 9 bucks you pay for a cup of coffee every six hours on your way to your one of many part time jobs.

It amazes me how people forget so quickly what a single party (the PC) did to this country. If you think Harper is for less government and more for individual freedom, just think again, the next time you are on your four chugging on some TS's limp you might be charged for buggery or worse. It doesn't really matter who you vote anymore anyways, the damage is done already.

                        Karen,
You couldn't have put in any better, and you did so in an un-partisan way. I too have been volunteering (delivering brochures, etc.) and am excited about voting tomorrow.
                        Take care...

It was the GST that paid down $60 billion dollars of our massive debt that was mostly racked up by the Trudeau administration. You can have your choice of taxes, but taxes, there will be. It is widely admitted that the GST is the fairest form of tax. Even the other parties admit that. As you cansee, it could have been recalled, but wasn't.
As for free trade, there will always be proponents and opponents of free trade. It has been gut wrenching for many industries, but whether we joined it or not, it would still be here. The fact that were chose to joined gives us the opportunity to compete. If we had not, then we would be sitting on the outside, looking in, with fewer jobs and less opportunity. I don't see any parties offering to opt out of freetrade or the GST.

If you've been paying attention (which it looks like you have not) the Conservatives are saying they are going to cut the GST back by 1 or 2%.

I'd rather it stay where it is, 15% is easy tax to calculate in my head. 13 and 14% is not.

Exactly, my point! Let us see who benefited from the free trade agreement and the GST. Multi-national corporations vis-vie the US. Let me explain. Most companies DO NOT pay a cent of GST because of all the tax expemption schemes that are avail to them. Hence, over 90% of the GST reveue collected is from the average Joe like you and me here. Second, the Free trade agreement allows companies to move goods and services across the boarder without paying a dime in tarrifs and taxes, hence huge profits. It also removed all trade barriers that protected home grown CANADIAN OWNED companies from the flood of cheap labor and capital. I could go on for days! But, you get the point! When it comes to fair taxation especially, I want you think about this - over 90% of the tax revenue collected by revenue canada is from indivudual tax payers and not corporations. Just think about it, where is the fairness in the tax system? Why doesn't the governement replace the current tax system with something more fair across the board. It can not. While the governement has emense power over the individual, it has zero power over the corporations as they can easily move show over night. As you see, our politicicans and the current governing system is pratically a burden for the average tax payer while it benefits the corporations thru the transfer of wealth... Open you eyes and see things for what they are, and by the end of the day, your pathetic vote does not amout to a dime!
