Monday, January 23rd is Election Day. I would just like to remind everyone to exercise one of the most sacred privilege and right every Canadian has in this country to determine our role in forming a government that we want. As for my transgendered sisters, it is very important that we won’t forget to go to our designated polling booths where we could vote for the candidate whom we deem could affect advantageously our way of life. I said privilege because we sometimes forget that not all people in the world have the opportunity to exercise this sacred right in a very clean, honest and democratic way.
I know some people are not that political and some are somewhat discouraged with the way some politicians have governed this country, that some have thought her or his single vote won’t matter in the overall outcome. But these are all false beliefs, in my opinion. We have to know that that single vote we would cast is the very vote that could determine the overall results in this election. We have to make our voices heard one ballot at a time. Politics is there to create order and whether we like it or not, we are part of it and greatly affected by it. If we think something is wrong with the government, it is not because of politics but it is due to some politicians who are protecting their vested interests at the detriment of the interests of the many among us. It is our role on Monday to weed out those who we think is giving politics a bad name and vote for those who we believe could protect our rights and interests as a distinct minority grouping.
I am currently helping the campaign of my local NDP candidate in my riding of Toronto Centre and it doesn’t matter what political leanings and beliefs we have and who are we going to vote for. The essential thing is we exercise our right and help determine the future of this GREATEST country earth.
Let us not be witnesses of history in the making. Let us be active, critical and analytical participants in the making of a government that we want.
On Monday, January 23rd 2005, let us all go out and have our voices heard!
