    John Elway

You're all wrong! John Elway was the best damned athlete ever created in this known universe.
I'm yelling this on sheer favoritism, foolish pride and such. If John Elway wasn't retired he could win the Super Bowl, MLB Pennant, NBA Championship, Stanley Cup, Fifa World Cup and Wimbledon ........

Ah yes, John Elway the man that won 2 Superbowls then retired.

      I submit SuperBowl IV (49ers - 55 Broncos 10). That doesn't count Superbowl XXI & XXII.

      Career Superbowl record 2-3.

          This is easy.
If you go anywhere but North America and ask this question, most people will say ?who??

Some will say oh Gretzky the hockey guy. Moon is not an icon in football like Elway is. But Gretzky is the great one, the biggest name in his sport.

So it?s Gretzky all the way.

Now if you did Gretzky VS Jordan? Jordan would take the cake.

The comparison was how widely they are known around the world,
not how great they were in their sport.

Gretzky is known by all Canadians.
In Canada I would say overall more people have heard of Gretzky.
Warren Moon is also known by most Canadians also, he is a CFL icon and hall of famer.

John Elway is more known as an NFL player but Warren Moon is close, they were both great.

In the United States, i can guarantee you that more people have heard of Warren Moon than Wayne Gretzky.
Many of the people in Detroit don't even know where Canada is.
I know I have mentioned Gretzky to many Americans with no recognition.
However NFL is extremely popular in the USA, hockey doesn't even rank down there really.
Warren Moon was a superstar in the most followed sport in the USA.

Outside of Canada hockey and Gretzky are not widely known.
The winter olympics is not nearly as big as summer, and really hockey is mainly played in the Northern Hemisphere.
You can almost say all of South America knows nothing of Gretzky.

The Superbowl is the single biggest one day sporting event in the world.
Not just in the USA, but in the world.

The USA and the NFL have huge saturation around the world.
Canada and the NHL are just not an influence, except maybe in Russia and sweden.

People in places like Japan and India have favourite NFL teams but they don't have favourite NHL teams generally.
Just travel around the world and you will see evidence of the NFL everywhere.

Moon was a top quarterback in one of the top sporting leagues in the world for like a dozen years.

In Canada no one will ever shine a light to Gretzky in sports notoriety, except maybe Bobby Orr or Don Cherry.

The NFL truly has saturation in every country in the world.
The NHL is only in a number of countries.

I think Pele has limited appeal because he was so long ago, most only remember Rinaldo and Ronaldihno now.
Soccer was not broadcast around the world back then.

Probably the most know athlete in the world is OJ Simpson an NFL player.
I would say even more known than Jordan or anyone.
Jordan could probably win because basketball is the by far the most popular in China.
Tiger woods may also have wider influence and would crush Gretzky in notoriety also.

The NFL has played pre season games around the world with great success.

                  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_International_Series

                  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Bowl

So I would say the ultimate showdown would be:

                  O.J. Simpson
                  Michael Jordan
                  Tiger Woods

Gretzky had and has his own videogames. There is no Warren Moon videogame.

Many countries hate Football, for multiple reasons because its ?American football? areas that play international ?football? (soccer for us) don?t like it just because the name. Places rugby is big think football is for pussies because of all the pads.
If it was Elway I?d say it would be close, but not Moon.
Gretzky transcends his sport where Moon does not.

You are right about Tiger, crushing Gretzky.

And OJ kills them all? lol

I think in history I?d say Muhammad Ali would win.

What I am saying is I have done this to some extent.
I have travelled the USA extensively and I play and love hockey.
When I have talked about hockey most people knew nothing and specifically nothing about any players.
In Texas, no one knows hockey, football is king, i have been to Dallas Stars games, the spectators don`t even know how hockey works.

My travels in Asia and South America there is people wearing NFL gear every where you go.
Nobody is wearing hockey gear. I wear canucks gear everywhere and no one says anything outside Canada.
I can buy an NFL jersey any major city in the world, and probably find a Moon jersey in many.
There is no where outside of North America I can say this about.

You can watch the Superbowl in every country, the Stanley Cup is broadcast in very few.
People that love NFL are fanatics and they know all the stars.

There just isn`t enough NHL fans to even hold a candle.

The UK loves NFL and London may soon have a team.

It`s huge and getting bigger every day.

Moon is alot bigger than most people in Canada realize.
He helped bring the run and shoot offense to the NFL, which Elway later perfected.
He was the all time leading passer in Pro football history and held many many NFL records.
He was the first modern black quarterback in the hall of fame, he is almost as famous in his sport as Gretzky.

                        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Moon

Harold Warren Moon (born November 18, 1956) is a former American professional gridiron football quarterback who played for the Canadian Football League's Edmonton Eskimos and the National Football League's Houston Oilers, Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs. He is currently a broadcaster for the Seattle Seahawks.
He is one of only two people to be enshrined in both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Canadian Football Hall of Fame. (Former coach Bud Grant, who coached the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to four Grey Cup titles and the Minnesota Vikings to four Super Bowl appearances, is the other.) Moon is the first modern African-American quarterback to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Moon held the record for most passing yardage in professional football until surpassed by Damon Allen on September 4, 2006,[1] held the record for most passing touchdowns in professional football until surpassed by Brett Favre on November 22, 2007, held the record for most pass completions in professional football until surpassed by Brett Favre on December 23, 2007,[2] and held the record for most pass attempts in professional football history until surpassed by Brett Favre on December 14, 2008.
