Today arriving in Calgary I encountered a very interesting situation checking into my hotel. Upon arriving at my hotel, I was asked for my last name. They did not ask me for ID, nor did they ask me for my credit card(s). A few seconds later (I doubt she even checked the computer) she responded to me that the hotel was completely booked. I found this weird as my room was bought off expedia and was prepaid. I quickly checked on my Iphone to see if there were any other hotels available in Calgary. To my amazement, the hotel that just told me that my room was unavailable...was available. I found this interesting. I called Expedia to rebook with another hotel, and they told me that my hotel was available and I responded telling them that I had received completely different information for the reception.
I returned inside and explained that I have multiple major Credit Cards, that I'm an Expedia VIP(I spend over 10 grand a year with them) and if it's an issue of security, they are more than welcome to take a larger security deposit. I told them that rooms were available online. I was told that even if I booked these rooms that the hotel was booked and checkin would be impossible for me. Expedia explained that this was impossible due to the fact that they buy these rooms from the hotel and resell them. Hence they cannot give my room to someone else.
Here is where it gets better. I call Expedia back to change hotels and the guy at Expedia calls the hotel because of cancelation fees that the hotel normally charges. I explained that this should not be an issue as they were the ones that denied me use of their hotel. The Expedia clerk returned only to advise me that they were going to charge me the cancelation fees. WHAT?!?! After explained to the Expedia dude that I didn't cancel...they did. If anything, I should charge them cancelation fees.
After a long fight with Expedia(Including me threatening to cancel the reminder of my Tour with then and book with the competition), they offered me credits to compensate for the theft the hotel pulled off. I explained to Expedia that there is nothing stopping the hotel from robbing anyone.
Serious, I travel with designer luggage, multiple credit cards, and I'm a VIP Expedia Member. I never show up at a hotel looking like some bum off the streets.
