    Human Settlement on Mars

Mars One designed a mission using only existing technology. In the coming years, a demonstration mission, communication satellites, two rovers and several cargo missions will be sent to Mars. A reliable living environment will be waiting for the astronauts when they leave Earth.
    The Mission Plan

    Astronaut Selection and Preparation

The global search has begun for the first humans to set foot on Mars and make it their home. In an extensive training period, candidates will learn the skills they will need on Mars and on their journey there. The combined skill set of each astronaut team member will cover a very wide range of disciplines.
In a 1000 years, everyone on Earth will still remember who the first humans on Mars were. More than 200,000 People from around the world responded to the first call for astronauts.

    You Make It Happen

The whole world will watch and experience this journey. We are all explorers. Everyone, including you, can participate in space exploration. This can be your mission to Mars!
Join our global effort by sharing our vision with your friends, supporting us and perhaps becoming a Mars astronaut yourself.

Good plan for preservation of the human race.

It's a good idea and next logical step in the preservation of the human race. Resources on planet earth will continue to dwindle in relation to the demands of a growing population. Spreading growth to Mars is a good idea for this reason and also to ensure the survival of the human race in the event of an E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event- ie asteroid/comet collision, nuclear war & nuclear winter, extreme effects of global warming, and of course the MOST likely everyone becoming ZOMBIES and consuming one another!)

The first 10 years will be pretty harsh and isolated until more inhabitants arrive and people begin having children born there, and the infrastructure and agricultural development becomes established.

I would go. But I think they need to think about a tera forming approach as a posed to a inclosed structure approach to living. I mean we can't keep up with pot holes forming in our streets how are we going to be able to maintain entire cities enclosed in domes? I think that approach is a disaster waiting to happen.

Yeah this is a really cool idea. It's been proposed many times before and there are still many issues that need to be overcome before they can actually send people. Hence all the studies lower gravity has in the human body. There is also the issue of Mars' lack of a magnetic field; can't keep an atmosphere if there is no magnetic field, and there will be no magnetic field as long as the core of the planet is frozen. On top of that there were the problems with presidents being in power for 4 - 8 years. When a new administration came into power they would always say "fuck it" with the old colonization plans and that's why it's been delayed for so long. Recently they've gone private, that is, the company doing the colonization if privately funded rather than government. This way their goals remain, regardless of what administration is in power.

Anyway, if you wanna go, you better make sure you have a TON of skills.

on the plus side, you'll be talked about in history for thousands of years to come.
You are the steps you take.

            Motivation..

            There's lots of motivation..

Occasionally the earth gets hit by things from space.. Some times these things are really big and cause extinctions and global catastrophe..

In 2029 there will be a asteroid known as Apophis that will come very close to the earth. Originally it was thought that it might hit us but it's not going to in 2029. It will however pass so close that it will go between the earth and out geosynchronous satellites. There is a small chance (a very big chance in astronomical terms) that it will pass through a keyhole area that could bring it back to earth and hit us in 2036..

Apophis is about 323 meters across and would impact the earth with an equivalent of 750 Megatons of explosive power depending upon it's chemical composition. If it's made of ice and rock it's not so bad, but if this is a nickle iron asteroid it could be very devastating. Either way if it hits a densely populated area it could kill millions of people..

As a comparison the Tunguska event which was an airburst explosion of a rock/ice meteor leveled and area of forest 50 miles in diameter. That event was 7-8 megatons.. Apophis is 100 times more powerful if it's rocky and 500 times more powerful if it's nickle iron.. So if it's nickle iron it could yield a 3000 megaton explosion on impact leaving a crater some 15-10km across VS rock and ice at 4-5km across and completely devastate a few thousand square km around the impact zone.. An ocean impact could produce tsunamis up to 100m in height by displacing thousands of cubic km of water which could very likely kill many millions of people and cause multiple trillions in damage..

It's a known fact that earth gets hit quite frequently in astronomical terms.. Apophis isn't an extinction impact scenario but it certainly could be a game changer.. If it hits the death toll could be in the 10's of millions..

We can't figure out how our planet works or take care of it....how the hell are we going to terraform another?

Here is an interesting fact. Forget space collisions, alien invasion, global warming, etc.. Better yet, Jupiter has a gravity field that has the possibility to destroy the solar system. http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog...to-chaos-.html Hence why she has 21 moons. She constantly pulls other objects into orbit. If we sent a satellite there, it will not return as it will not be able to break free of it's gravity field. But this will happen way before that. The recent change in the ocean currents is much more serious than people understand. The moon has a strong relationship with tidal patterns. The recent changes in the oceans have caused the moon's orbit to shift and one day the moon will collide with the Earth as earths gravity will pull her towards us.

              Life will end.

What goes up, must come down and all beginnings have an end. One day life on this planet will end, just like one day the universe will be no more.

No shit.. but we don't need to worry.. when we fuck up the next planet we just have to find another one..

That's a long way off.. We are more likely to have a few more massive KT size impacts with other objects before that happens..

I also don't think the moon colliding with the earth will destroy the earth.. The moon's mass will be absorbed into the planet, the atmosphere will be torn off the earth. When that happens all the water will freeze instantly as it's exposed to the vacuum of space and absolute 0 degree temperatures..

Once things settle down the water will start to melt, the atmosphere will grow and the dynamo inside the earth will regenerate the magnetic field..

The moon is not that big.. Life will go on.. without humans..

None the less.. the only way to increase the chances of humanity surviving for a long time is to be diverse and inhabit more than one world..

One day.. we might be forced to travel to a primitive world somewhere.. then we will become the ancient aliens who from the heavens came..

And what planet do we presently have the technology to reach? And if we did, do you really think we are all going to escape? Welcome to Noah's Ark. Where the rich and powerful will choose who lives and who dies. As I said before, if any of the end world theories are true, we cannot stop it, prevent it or escape it. Just like what goes up must come down, everything that has a beginning comes to an end. Even if our species survives the end of this planet, in the larger picture the universe will come to an end...finding another could be difficult.

I'm not a quitter, I'm a realist with common sense. You people run for the lifeboats, I will take that precious time to say goodbye to those I loved.

                              Terraforming Mars.

I watched this video recently and saw how they might intend to make Mars more earth-like.
I dunno, folks, it looks kinda sketchy to me.
It seems we only know how to ruin things, and, so, we will travel to other planets and bring our destructive technology with us.

                              Terraforming.
Move the time counter to just before 1:03:16 and watch the rest of the video to see what they are suggesting at THIS time to terraform Mars.
                              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRxskmMMnfc
It's only a suggestion for now, but to even think of suggesting such a thing. I dunno, folks.

I am no scientist that's for sure and even i can see just by looking at what's been done to Earth to know it's wrong to start a new planet from THAT idea that you will see in the video.

If they do this and depend on it for years to terraform Mars, how will they then just "decide" to scrap it all, afterwards. They WON'T!!
It's kind of like the tobacco companies and the auto industry scrapping their factories for the benefit of human health and for health of the planet.
The ball will be far too big by then, to simply stop it from rolling - especially when major investors invest Big Mars Money into the Mars venture. It's always going to be about money.
The J.P Morgans and Rockefellers will all get involved and cash-in and then what?
