Occasionally the earth gets hit by things from space.. Some times these things are really big and cause extinctions and global catastrophe..

In 2029 there will be a asteroid known as Apophis that will come very close to the earth. Originally it was thought that it might hit us but it's not going to in 2029. It will however pass so close that it will go between the earth and out geosynchronous satellites. There is a small chance (a very big chance in astronomical terms) that it will pass through a keyhole area that could bring it back to earth and hit us in 2036..

Apophis is about 323 meters across and would impact the earth with an equivalent of 750 Megatons of explosive power depending upon it's chemical composition. If it's made of ice and rock it's not so bad, but if this is a nickle iron asteroid it could be very devastating. Either way if it hits a densely populated area it could kill millions of people..

As a comparison the Tunguska event which was an airburst explosion of a rock/ice meteor leveled and area of forest 50 miles in diameter. That event was 7-8 megatons.. Apophis is 100 times more powerful if it's rocky and 500 times more powerful if it's nickle iron.. So if it's nickle iron it could yield a 3000 megaton explosion on impact leaving a crater some 15-10km across VS rock and ice at 4-5km across and completely devastate a few thousand square km around the impact zone.. An ocean impact could produce tsunamis up to 100m in height by displacing thousands of cubic km of water which could very likely kill many millions of people and cause multiple trillions in damage..

It's a known fact that earth gets hit quite frequently in astronomical terms.. Apophis isn't an extinction impact scenario but it certainly could be a game changer.. If it hits the death toll could be in the 10's of millions..
Such an impact if nickel iron and assuming a land collision could lead to an extinction level event as such catastrophic impact explosions put so much material into the upper atmosphere that they would trigger an ice age. The immediate impact besides devastating 1000's of square miles could also fracture and set off other earthquakes and volcanic eruptions along the fault lines. Again increasing the likelihood of a "nuclear winter" and possible ice age.
There is likely to be survivors of the initial impact, eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis etc but most would die within the next few years as all plant life and animal life dies.
Having a self sustaining colony on Mars may not help the inhabitants of earth in such a scenario but again would guarantee the survival of the human race. And hopefully no Zombies are stowaways on the Mars bound ships as that would fuck them up too!

                  Mars Will Attack!

I think fearing the impending earthling invasion that the Martians may decide on a "first strike" initiative and will attack! Or they will blow our ships out of the sky as soon as they are close enough to Mars as it will take 2 years for any reinforcements to arrive. Martians tuned into all the cowboy and indian movies years ago and they sure as hell are not going to let that shit happen to them!

Apophis isn't that big thankfully.. It's likely to hit the Pacific ocean by current estimates if it passes through the center of the keyhole..

With this one it's best if it hits the land though as the devastation would be more localized.. If it hits in the pacific it will cause a series of 100' waves that will destroy everything along the coasts..

I think it's interesting though that the Netherlanders are the ones doing this Mars venture.. Queen B maybe?

Just imagine.. the first ones who go to Mars lay claim to it and it's resources.. it's worth hundreds of trillions..

Netherlanders know lots about resources and live in an area that looks like mars.. lol..

I wonder how big the diamonds are in some of those massive volcanoes.. and how much gold is there..

Mars is very very rich in all kinds of mineral resources..

The colony plan is to get people living there full time yes..

I'm certain that the future plans will also include return trips which will include cargo..

Sending cargo back is much easier than people as it won't need life support and it can take the slow road..

Also this cargo would be then used to finance further development in sending more stuff from earth..

                        it's a business venture..

I'm pretty sure we'll be all dead and gone by the time that happens, problem with sending back so many valuable resources is that they would flood the market making them worthless. I get the idea however if something like this is going to work, greed, wealth and personal gain would have to cease to exist on a global scale with everyone on board. Kind of like a Star Trek ideology. Will this happen.... Not in my lifetime.

                            Hot...

Silly idea. And, too, a waste of money.
I mean, if some billionaire or billionaires want to finance it, well, good luck.
Look at the moon landing. 20 billion bucks to, well, study the moon... ha ha! Insane.
I mean, what's wrong with Planet Earth?
Is Earth that dull that people wanna leave to go to a very/extremely inhospitable place like Mars.
And wouldn't people get awfully bored on Mars.... Yes? No?
I don't mean to sound like a Killjoy. But we have plenty of problems on planet Earth. And we need that money to sort out the slew of problems we face.
And I really don't grasp the idea of wanting to go somewhere else. It strikes me as rather strange.
I'm sure when global warming becomes worse, well, people, uber rich people, will seek out escape routes -- ha ha!
Again, I don't think we should socialize the costs... like we do -- or did -- with sports stadiums, computers, the Internet, radio, TV... etc., etc., etc.
If uber rich people want to absorb all the costs, well, good luck to 'em....

Ever hear of kickstarter? big projects don't require big men behind them anymore. As long as you sell your idea and 1mil people send you 1dollar, you've done some really good financing.
You're dismissing NASA because they went to the moon and found nothing, well that drove economy. I would encourage you to look up all the benefits our society has received from NASA and space research innovations.

Earth is beautiful! but wars have been the historical tool for population control and we have a ridiculous amount of people. In order to make way for more people we often destroy green areas, eliminating species all together. So the way it stands, we either slowly destroy mother nature or we have to bomb each and kill a couple of billions so we may have space again.

Idk, some people have to party, some people are happy with other things. I would be happy knowing that I DIRECTLY helped colonize the first planet outside from our own. Shit man, people would talk about me for 1000s of years. Fuck boredom, it's not about having fun it's about the future of your species. And besides there would be an even amount of men and women, you would not be bored.
