Why Estonia Might Be Next on Putin?s ?Wanted? List

By Rob Garver | The Fiscal Times ? Tue, 9 Sep, 2014

President Obama last week reaffirmed the United States? commitment to the security of Estonia, one of a handful of small former Soviet states bordering Russia that have joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Two days later, according to the Estonian government, Russian agents crossed the border, and using smoke grenades and radio jamming devices, kidnapped an officer of the country?s Internal Security Service.

The officer, Eston Kohver, appeared later that day in Moscow, where he was charged with spying and carrying an illegal handgun, according to the British Broadcasting Corporation. Russia claims that Kohver was arrested on Russian soil, but Estonian officials claim that not only is this untrue, but that Kohver appears to have walked into a trap set by Russia?s security service, the FSB.

The alleged kidnapping of Kohver has increased tensions among the independent states in Europe and Asia that were once part of the Soviet Union. Russia?s invasion of Ukraine?s Crimean peninsula this summer, and its ongoing support, including troops and weaponry, of rebels in Eastern Ukraine has many concerned that Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to reunite the former Soviet Union by force.

In remarks at the opening of the Estonian Parliament on Monday, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves said that Russia?s aggression in Ukraine has revealed its true intent.

?The masks have fallen,? he said. ?We see how Russia continues to isolate itself from democratic nations.? Addressing the taking of the security officer, he said, ?Russian security service FSB kidnapped an Estonian citizen from Estonian soil and took him to a prison in Moscow and even bans the Estonian consul from meeting the Estonian citizen.?

Ilves made it clear that he is counting on his country?s relationship with the West ? including the United States ? to protect Estonia from its much larger neighbor.

?Our past decision - to embrace democracy, a rule of law, the European Union and NATO is now our best defense,? Ilves said.

Estonian officials said Kohver was in a wooded area near the town of Miikse in southeast Estonia, near the Russian border when he was abducted. Officials told Estonian media that Kohver was an organized crime investigator, and was there to meet an alleged informant.

Arnold Sinisalu, the head of the Estonian Internal Security Service, said that Kohver had armed backup officers nearby, but they were unable to react in time, because the abductors used smoke grenades and radio jamming devices to make communications difficult.

?One must take into account the fact the thick smoke the explosive device produced, and when the forces reacted Eston Kohver was already taken to Russia,? Sinisalu said.

Kohver was quickly taken to Moscow, where he was charged with spying and illegal possession of a firearm. Russian officials displayed his property to the media, including a pistol, a recording device, and 5,000 euros in cash. They said that he was carrying documents ?indicative of an intelligence mission.?

Estonian officials retorted that the cash and recording device had been for the informant who Kohver was supposed to be meeting

Even in the event the Estonian government?s version of the story turns out to be true, the idea of Russian agents crossing the border of another former Soviet state is sure to provoke worry in Russia?s other, smaller neighbors. The crisis in Ukraine has been punctuated with stories of ?little green men? ? the recently adopted term for men in uniforms with no insignia who appeared in key areas of Ukraine as rebels fought with government troops. The assumption among many is that the unidentified soldiers are Russian troops detailed for unofficial duty in Ukraine.

Estonia officials told Western media that in the immediate aftermath of the incident, Estonian and Russian border guards met and surveyed the site, determining that a number of men had crossed the border from Russia, and that blast marks from a smoke or flash-bang grenade were found on the Estonian side. That has not been confirmed by Russia.

You step in here, and use antagonistic words on me like "common man! Clean your mind" Yet you made no prior comments throughout the entire thread! And you don't realize the difference between " common" and " come on!"

I got in trouble in the forum several times for being too emotional, or disrespectful and such. But I've never done it first. Now I'll probably get in trouble again thanks to you!! And once again...I DIDN'T DO IT FIRST! I usually try to be careful because Sometimes you just don't know if a person is playing with a full deck. But it's now Too late...I've started and am too emotional to stop!

OK, enough Mugsammy...get ahold of yourself! WHEW!!! Got it!

      So, here we go....

First...I get a feeling that you are a Russian immigrant. Or a Russian speaking Ukrainian?

I suppose the fear of dozens of EU countries is solely the fault of the US. The fact that Russia has invaded so many countries is all in the defence of and protection against the US!

Do you recall Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko? He was a Ukrainian, Russia didn't like him...KGB tried to kill him with poison. Who did he defeat in the election...Yanukovych, that's who.

In the following election Russia ensured Yanukovych won. Who was running against him? Yushchenko! And if I'm right about you, you know how the Russians did it. If I'm wrong, I can explain how it was done. Hint...it may have something to with people "being forced, paid and told" who to vote for. It was also very well orchestrated making the race appear close. But that's what the Russians do best! Do you actually believe the US are the only players on a world stage? Tsk tsk tsk!

Whether the wars are to support economies really doesn't matter, what does matter is there is still war and people die!

Most of us realize that war is politics and posturing. Evil is everywhere. A powerful military is also a countries safety net. Why do you think Putin and other invaders historically invade smaller, weaker military countries? We will never be able to live in peace so we better be strong.

Crimea...belongs to Ukraine, don't ever doubt that. The Crimean referendum was Illegal, go back in the thread, read some of the other comments, you'll see why it was illegal.

As for the east Ukraine, you don't like it...get on the buses and go to Russia! There's plenty of land to go around! Enough for everybody! They'll even give you an old Communist era apartment to live in...for free!!!

Russian navy base on the Crimea peninsula, they just completed a 50 year lease agreement with Ukraine to continue to run/operate their base. Therefore the base was not a factor in the decision to invade Crimea. Do you realize how long it would take for the US to build a base in Crimea? Which is what you claim.

Russia's largest sales of military weapons...China, India, Syria, Afghanistan, North Korea, Argentina, Iran, Iraq....need I say more?

The Maidan, the problem developed in Kiev when President Yanukovych met with Putin, and like a Putin puppet Yanukovych promptly journeyed off to China where he leased off another large part of Crimea to China, then he run right back into Putins arms! Suspicious? Hummmm! And against the people's wishes. The people who he's supposed to be working for.

What did China want with a large chunk of Crimea...on the Black Sea? The explanation was "so they could develop the area to produce food"...FOOD!!! LOL! REALLY NOW!!! The plan was "China would build ship yards, develop the land, grow the food, load the ships (Chinese ships) for delivery to China. Guess how many Ukrainian jobs? ZERO!!! Only Chinese allowed to work. China would bring in all of their own people to perform the entire operation.

The President was selling the country away! He was a Russian, he could care less about Ukrainians. As a matter of fact, he could care less about Russian Ukrainians!

So ask yourself....how much did Yanukovych pocket from this deal? Where did the money go? How did Yanukovych bank 30 billion in only 3 years in office? 30 billion himself! Not including his cronies! When "his" country is in economic distress...sinking! 30 Billion would have bailed them out! Pro-Russian government...RUSSIANS!!! But continue to blame it on Ukraine! However...I would like to point out that Ukrainian politician were equally corrupt. The political system has to change.

Russia has a base in a foreign country so it's ok to invade it militarily to protect your interests...take a look at where the US have bases around the world. Maybe the US should invade to protect their interests. Not just Middle East. Personally I feel they should start with Japan! Especially after what Japan did to drag the US into the 2nd Great War. After Japan, Germany! Just for starters.

Anyways, enough of that crap. Another point we should never forget...THE US IS STILL THE ONLY MILITARY SUPERPOWER ON EARTH BAR NONE!! And that includes Nukes! There is also NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT! Russia cannot hold a candle no matter how they posture.

Next, ask yourself why do European countries feel that they need to protect themselves in numbers, the EU? With Russia being their biggest fear.
