In Edmonton, Telus officially went from the old analog transmission system to digital, at the end of January this year. But, I had to upgrade to a new phone in November of 2016 since, there were many places where my flip phone would no longer work. When I went to the Telus store, I was told that, even though the official switch to digital was still over two months away, they were no longer properly maintaining the old analog system. Thus, an old analog phone is not going to work on a new digital transmission system.

Most places are just letting their CDMA network die slowly.

As long as you have at least a 3G capable phone it can be re used as a burner.

If it is CDMA it won't work in most places now.
It also may not be the same frequency as Canadian providers.

You can take you phone to any provider to get a simm card.
Fido or Koodoo or something may be cheaper.

You don't need the newest phone to get it activated and use it for a burner.
Just dig out your old blackberry or Nokia or something.

This is true, I myself have a few older smart phones. However, since they were originally registered to me, they are traceable to me, so if you pay cash for a pay as you go phone, they can`t trace it back to you.

The only way they can trace an old device to you is if they have your IMEI number on the phone.
The IMEI number is never broadcast to other users so they would have to take if from your unlocked phone, or it would have to be given to them by someone who has access to your phone.
Sure they could hack someone or find some hacked data but they would first have to know you name or your IMEI number for that phone. It is really only if they can match your name to a phone number that there is a danger.

If your phone is unlocked from a carrier you can still buy the prepaid cards or get prepaid service from a carrier.
If you have wiped the phone to nothing there will no other trace of you on that phone.
It is only the relation between you and the IMEI but generally only your carrier would know that.

Even one of the new dual simm phones that are coming out should work fine.
I hear the new all touch blackberry coming out may have dual simms, I might get that.

              Question for the burner gurus

Say I bought a used smartphone that was unlocked off craiglist or kijiji or a flea market, could I then just go into a place that sells pay as you go sim card? Do they sell sim cards like that? how does that work? Would I not be anonymous persay save the person I bought the phone from who is anonymous to me as I to them. I am wanting a burner phone anonymous, pay cash never use my own internet connection to activate etc...

If you buy a used phone that is unlocked you should be able to get a pay as you go simm card if your phone is compatible with the network you are connecting to. Not every phone works with every company.

ANYONE would have to know the IMEI number of the phone to associate you with the phone.
If you are not sending any information when you call, no app or software can know who you are.
You buy a used phone or activate an old phone with a new simm and you send no information when you call or text, there is nothing they can find out about you. The IMEI number is only known to the phone company.

If you give a phone number or a name then then it is possible to track you maybe.

No one can know the IMEI number of any phone unless you actually give it to them.
They cannot look it up unless they can hack the phone company and know your name or IMEI number in advance.

If you call someone and give them no information, they cannot just figure who you are from no information.
They need some piece of information to track you, name, phone number, email etc.

PHONES ARE NOT PHYSICALLY ASSOCIATED TO A PERSON, ONLY THE PHONE NUMBER IS.
IF YOU DO A SECURITY WIPE ON THE PHONE IT IS AS ANONYMOUS AS ANY NEW OR USED PHONE.

The 7-11 Speak Out is definitely way to go. Phone and pay as you go plan. Anonymous activation, minutes last a year if you don't use them. Residual dollar amounts are added to next years balance on renewal. If however you don't like the idea of carrying two phones Fongo app (VoIP) is another great solution.

Normally pay as you go simm cards have a number already assigned to them.

You can buy them from 7-11 at the store or online.
Then you must register online to activate it.
It does ask for your name but not sure if you can put a fake.
                      https://www.speakout7eleven.ca/

Petro Canada and many others basically offer the same thing.

If you have a used phone that is compatible with the simm card then there is not any reason to buy a phone too.
Doing a security wipe of your old device will remove any traces of you.

Pre paid service from anywhere will work if the phone number is unlisted and never used by you online.
If the number is not connected to you online or with any companies then you cannot be traced.

There is places online you can order anonymous simm cards but these often come from other countries that have no rules.

You aren't dealing with Russian hackers here, these escorts can only get information using what you give them.
Using apps or websites that are available usually with very outdated information.
It is when you associate your phone number to social media that your real problems begin.
Facebook, line, whatsapp etc etc. can all compromise your anonymity as you have to use your phone number.
This is why BBM Pins were so good, however not so many uses that anymore.
Not sure what happens if you make a voice call through BBM, what shows up.

You can easily use a post paid number too if you take care not to let your number get out there.

I paid $60.00 for a flip top phone at Walmart yesterday. Rogers has a variety of cards available. I bought a couple $10.00 cards. I stopped by a Rogers store and they activated for free.
