Yes he does look Irish, he also looks American.
Black and/or brown people come from many places besides Africa.
Saying an Irish man cannot be black or brown or whatever is racist in itself. So if he was white and redheaded but from Africa. Does that mean that he cannot be called african american?
As I said before, Obama is an American pure and simple.
He himself said he is not running as a Black candidate.
I think a black president would have been significant 40-50 years ago.
Now days he's just another man, who has never lived in a Black slum or anything else that people identify with downtrodden African-Americans.
He was never a slave nor were any of his ancestors.
Hillary may have more balls than most men but she is still a woman.
Women are entirely different than a man and would naturally behave different than a man.
I think a woman becoming leader of the world super power would be one of the most signifcant events in all of history.
Many, many black/brown/African men have held the leadership of many nations and countries. Very few women of any kind have held these types of roles ever in the history of the world.
Specifically a woman who was voted in by a democratic process rather than becoming the default leader by bloodline (ie The Queen)
White people aren't indigenous to sub saharan Africa that is why we don't refer to white people from Africa.
Obama grew up in America. He experience the systemic racial prejudice that is a reality in most of America. To say that Obama was never a slave nor any of his ancestors is ignorant. Even in Kenya today the slave trade is rampant. How you can say with certainty that none of Obama's ancestor were slaves is beyond me. I am surprised that you don't think a black President is a major achievement. How many other candidate's for President in the history of the United States? 50 years ago black Americans couldn't even sit in the same section on the bus as white people. They couldn't attend the same schools never mind run for President. Even today Obama is the only black person in the US Senate. If you doubt that it is an achievement to have become the nominee you need only speak to his campaign staff who called registered Democrats. Some were told they would never vote for a black person and that Obama should hang from a noose.
How many black Presidents/leaders of predominantly white nations have their been? Many nations have had female Presidents/leaders, England, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Argentina, Germany, New Zealand, Mozambique, Israel, Lesotho, Netherlands to name a few.
Unfortunately America has never had a female leader and had Hillary won it would have been a break through. However Obama's accomplishment is no less worthy.
Obama has had an uphill battle, even you mentioned that his father was Muslim despite the fact it had no bearing on the discussion. Obama has faced slander of every kind, they try one thing if that doesn't work they try another. Although I don't perceive having a Muslim father many Americans believe Islam and terrorism is one in the same.

They sure do need to change something. Obama has the JFK thing going for him. After 8 years of being led by a 'frying pan' here is someone who has the charisma to motivate and unite his people.
Whether he is just an image of a potentially great leader or truly someone who can bring about the massive shift of consciousness required is unknown, but what is known is that Clinton and McCain will continue down the road that is now that slippery slope.

Anyway,- Obamas mothers family can be traced back from Hawaii through the midwest US then Ireland, no slavery there.
- Obama's father was a rich politician descended from wealth he was educated in Hawaii, I doubt there is any slavery there. (Maybe they had slaves themselves more likely)
- How is my reasoning ignorant?
I am just trying to say race is nothing anymore, we categorize people unecessarily. In the future we will probably breed out all the different races eventually. Then all we will have is Men and Women.
Not saying there hasn't been women leaders and heros in the past, just never has such a powerful state had a woman at the helm.
I'm not talking about predominatly white nations here, I am just talking about all nations.

Obama may be the man, however IMO not now. his election to the Presidency could be the WORST outcome this November. The United States is in a state of peril both at home and abroad. They are fighting a war on two fronts with no realistic means or time frame to end it. The economy is in serious trouble beyond the housing and sub prime credit crises.
Obama has no foreign policy experience. Obama has no national domestic policy experience. Obama may preach "change" and look good on stage, but the US desperately needs a leader with experience and the fortitude to make tough decisions which while unpopular in the short term will be best for that nations future generations.
I have watched Obama all the way through this. the hype started after a stirring speech at the last DNC. The problem is, yes he can speak, yes he can inspire bu the man is too politically inexperienced to clean up the current mess.
Obama may be the man, but not today.
In my opinion now is when America needs Obama. Bush and McCain have started two wars, one on pure lies and the other is a quagmire. They turned the largest budget surplus into the largest budget deficit and they have made America the most hated nation on earth. They have rolled back the clock on civil rights before Habeas Corpus and the Magna Carta. They have made hate and prejudice acceptable again all in the name of security. The sub prime mortgage mess which lead to the housing mess started with Bush. He changed the lending laws which made it easier to borrow money. The Attorney Generals of every State disagreed with him but Bush did it anyway.
I hear people say Obama has no foreign policy experience. He is on the Council of Foreign relations. He has more Foreign Policy experience than Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan had when they became President. When it came to the most important foreign policy decision in a generation, John McCain and Hillary Clinton got it wrong. Barack Obama got it right, he was against the Iraq war from the beginning while Hillary convinced Democrats to vote in favour of it and McCain is still in favour of it. Citizens for Global Solutions gave Obama an A+ for his foreign policy positions.
Obama started his political career in the Illinois Senate in 1996 through to 2004. He has more political experience than Hillary both foreign and domestic.
I hear McCain touting his experience and his foreign policy experience. During the Republican debates McCain said he would reduce interest rates to 0%. Can you imagine that no cost to borrow money, inflation would be through the roof and the U.S. dollar would drop like a stone. McCain also stated that he would stay a 100 years in Iraq and he wants to bomb Iran. McCain has consistently got the people, positions and the parties wrong when discussing the Middle East. On this youtube video Leiberman has to correct McCain on camera for screwing up the Middle East players. After a life in the Senate you think he would know better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6GBdyws5YU
Obama has never made these mistakes. He knows that isolating nations in the Middle East doesn't make you more secure. A poll taken by the Jerusalem Post showed that 65% of Israelis agreed with President Carter meeting Hamas.
Certainly Obama is young but Bill Clinton was only 47 when he was elected in 1993. Obama is currently 46.
I don't agree with every position Obama has but I think people underestimate him. As he said it is usually the people who talk tough who aren't tough. He is the right man for 2008 America needs Obama.

Who is Barack Obama? No one knows...because he's just a one term Senator with no history of accomplishments in the political realm. In the end it doesn't matter. But him and Clinton are too polarizing of figures to win the Presidency. Mark my words, for right or wrong, McCain will win this election.

Hey Lisa, Sounds like a plan. I have sent you a couple of emails in the past but you never replied and I read in one of your posts that you delete most of your emails. Is there some way we could communicate via email. That seems to be my favorite method now days.

I like to point some things, out of the view of a American board member:
Pro McCain: He spent more time in a POW camp then Obama spent in comgress. [think about that for a moment]
Anti McCain: He voted with Bush over 95% of the time, let's be honest Bush has run America into the ground. Great reason note to vote for McCain.
Now Obama was a leap in faith by Americans, he sold us on a bunch of promises. I for one do not know? If he is fit to watch my daughter pet goldfish, let alone run the office of president.
But like many of my fellow Americans, who want our country to be a beacon for the world. We voted him into office, not because of his race. But because we want America to be something special again.
Now I have 2 bi-racial children and work in law enforcement, there always going to be racism, not only in America but in the world. Why? because it's human nature to be afraid of the unknown. Same reason why some people hate TS or gay men or women.
I hate reading how some board member's bash America on this site, it's not like America sits around and bashes Canadians. By the way Canada has it's own problems also. My mother is a proud Canadian citizen, so I know a thing or two about your flaws in goverment.
Lisa great topic and thanks for posting it on the forum!
By the member's how about those Boston Bruins? Bobby Orr must be proud! [smile]

i think the election of Obama signals a geat opportunity for the USA and the rest of the world. I remeber the days of JFK and our own flamboyant Trudeau. those were magical times in politics and social reform. We can only hope someone will turn up as a leader in Canada that doesnt appear to represent a fish out of water like they all do now.according to some, not trangendered

i think Justin is being primed. Lets hope he is as flamboyant as his father and also as clever in governing a country, something Harper and the guys seem to miss, they seem to think being the head gives them the right to rule not govern. power corrupts etc.according to some, not trangendered
