Hi everyone, I have some bad news about my undergraduate thesis on the trans sex industry. It looks like I'm going to have to put it off until next year.
I'm afraid I haven't been able to receive approval for "Human Subject Research" (meaning interviews) from the Ethics Review Board at U of T. Even though the Board is mostly concerned with psychological and medical experimentation, they also have to review and approve any primary research in the Social Sciences as well, to guarantee "ethical treatment" of all potential subjects.
Because the Board considers trans sex workers to be a "highly vulnerable demographic" (which is ironic, since many of us earn a lot more money than they do) they've tabled my project for further review, and I don't know when the decision will finally be made. Therefore, there's a high probability that I won't be able to use information I've received through direct interviews in my project.
I can't afford to take that risk, so I've decided to withdraw my Ethics Review submission, and alter my project so that I rely entirely on secondary research (other articles and scholarly publications). I still plan to examine the ways that the "shemale" niche differs from the wider sex industry as a whole, but because I'll be relying on secondary sources only, that means that the Ethics Review Board has no say on the content of my project. Unfortunately, it also means I won't be doing any interviews this year.
Thank you so much to everyone that expressed an interest in my project, and I promise that, when it happens, I'll definitely want to receive your input. However, it won't be for at least another year.
Sorry everyone - I'm disappointed, because was really looking forward to it, and I know that many of you were as well. But I'm going to look at this as a temporary hurdle, rather than a rejection; I promise I'll find a way to get this research done, and make our voices heard.
