  • Bad news about my project

Hi everyone, I have some bad news about my undergraduate thesis on the trans sex industry. It looks like I'm going to have to put it off until next year.

I'm afraid I haven't been able to receive approval for "Human Subject Research" (meaning interviews) from the Ethics Review Board at U of T. Even though the Board is mostly concerned with psychological and medical experimentation, they also have to review and approve any primary research in the Social Sciences as well, to guarantee "ethical treatment" of all potential subjects.

Because the Board considers trans sex workers to be a "highly vulnerable demographic" (which is ironic, since many of us earn a lot more money than they do) they've tabled my project for further review, and I don't know when the decision will finally be made. Therefore, there's a high probability that I won't be able to use information I've received through direct interviews in my project.

I can't afford to take that risk, so I've decided to withdraw my Ethics Review submission, and alter my project so that I rely entirely on secondary research (other articles and scholarly publications). I still plan to examine the ways that the "shemale" niche differs from the wider sex industry as a whole, but because I'll be relying on secondary sources only, that means that the Ethics Review Board has no say on the content of my project. Unfortunately, it also means I won't be doing any interviews this year.

Thank you so much to everyone that expressed an interest in my project, and I promise that, when it happens, I'll definitely want to receive your input. However, it won't be for at least another year.

Sorry everyone - I'm disappointed, because was really looking forward to it, and I know that many of you were as well. But I'm going to look at this as a temporary hurdle, rather than a rejection; I promise I'll find a way to get this research done, and make our voices heard.

    Damned regulations!

Nikki, I was surprised and disappointed to find that you have had this decision come down against you, effectively thwarting your efforts to complete that work you have embarked upon with such fervor.

Just do what you have to do to satisfy the "system" and complete the requirements for that "paper" you are working towards. Once that is out of the way and in a frame on your wall, you will be free to go on to complete your original project.
    I know you will.

          Universities can suck this way.

          I have a Bachelor of Administration &
I have an associate diploma in Computer Science issued by the Faculty of science.

However when i went to apply to the faculty of Science to finish my last 10 classes for my computer science degree,
they told me i had to take Grade 12 Geo Trig?
I've already taken 2 calculus classes, it just makes no sense.

                ...

Ahhhh the politics of universities. They'll never change. Ultra conservative types trying to pretend they listen.

Shame Nikki. It would've been a great read I'm sure.

That's ok. Maybe we can arrange a lunch some time, my treat. I know what it was like to be the "struggling" student. Heh heh

By the way, you had some nice moves when I saw you at Goodhandy's a few weeks back.Too bad the pole didn't come into play.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the support you've all given me. After taking a step back and re-examining the situation, it's not as bad as I thought.

I can still do an undergraduate thesis on the same topic, relying on secondary sources instead of primary research; then, next year, as part of my graduate degree, I can pick up where I left off, and do primary research to confirm or refute my findings from the secondary literature used in my undergrad thesis.

Doing interviews as a grad student means that I'll be applying to a different Ethics Review Board, and they'll have different criteria that I need to satisfy. Therefore, I actually have a much better chance of doing my project in the way I actually wanted to - if I had to make changes to satisfy this particular Board, I might not have the amount of flexibility I was hoping for.

All things considered, it's a pretty good result, because I'll also have additional publishing opportunities as a grad student, compared to those that I'll have as an undergrad.

So, for everyone that has been helpful and supportive so far, I still have every intention of hearing your stories; it's just going to happen a little later in my academic career. But hey, for those things that are important, I can afford to be patient.

                          Thanks again, everyone!
