Song of the week: TLC - Waterfalls. Light horns and guitar with neo funk blended in with fantastic lyrics made this an instant radio classic. This song is their signature. Ask anyone who listens to r and b/rap and as soon as you say TLC they talk about this tune. the one thing that puzzles me to this day though is the vocals. One sounds a little low on pitch the other too nasally while the other isalmost like its not signing but rather reciting the tune and yet meshed together it sounds wonderful. Its a sound that technically should not work but it does. Ah well. This was the pinnacle of their success until a tragic accident claimed the life of one of the groups members. Shame too because they could've had a wonderful legacy.


Movie: Thor Upon first seeing the trailer I immediately thought "Here we go. Yet another movie based on a comic book." It seems that this past decade every bloody comic book hero is having a film made. I really don't know why the sudden surge but my guess is to boost sales of the books. Quite frankly not all comic book heroes should have a film. Some stories aren't interesting enough so when watching Thor I was cynical. A few minutes in watching however I was thinking to myself. "Hey this isn't bad at all." First of all its directed by Kenneth Branagh (known for Shakespearean works), second it's somewhat serious and dark almost like that of the Batman franchise and lastly it doesn't over sell or make anyone look dorky. It's a polished effort. Basically the god of thunder is banished to Earth due to being arrogant and must prove himself. Simple enough but add some very nice visuals, a well rounded cast and a few unexpected turns and you have a surprise hit. Will this change my views on other comic book films? Hardly but if other flicks out there were to try and put in an effort to be serious to the origin then maybe the stuff out there wouldn't be so bad.

The summer is just about over. Its been ridiculously hot and sticky pretty much everywhere along the east coast of North America. Some days were just unbearable. In fact some retailer in my vicinity were sold out of all their fans. Yes, fans. Not air conditioners. Personally I'd take AC over a fan anyday but I guess you factor in cost and energy use and then a fan aint so bad. I dare not say the "w" word but I am thinking what will it be like when that white stuff begins to fall? Is it gonna be stupidly cold or will it be a mild season later on. me I'd rather we get no snow ....ever. Hate the stuff.

The NFL season is starting. To me thats a big thing. I've always loved NFL action and despise CFL. Don't know why, just always have. Perhaps its because there are more upsets in the NFL than the CFl and the greater range of teams, again I can't define it. Oh yeah and right around the corner it'll be the hockey season. Sports, music, work, sex and going to the occasional national art galleries in and around Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa - typical alpha male stuff.....LOL.

My apologies to all but I keep forgetting to introduce the ICE BREAKERS idea. I did get a few people to contribute to it its just i keep forgetting to post the thing up. With a few extra days off this week I may finally get around to it.

Ice Breakers

Finally managed to post this idea and here it is , Ice Breakers! The intention of the idea is to get forum members to get more acquainted with one another adding an element of surprise. A while ago I asked maldita and maddplotter about movies and asked what their favorite films are. Neither knew that I would be comparing them to one another. After learning what they liked I found some similarity and here is the result. The inaugural Ice Breakers. What's this mean? Simple. They have that connection.

Think about it this way. people often wonder if others share the same tastes as they do and I thought...well...what would be more cool and fun than to compare things with the super hot girls and established studs here on this site so to speak.

LOL...who knows....in the future if this continues some people may develop bragging rights and say....." So and so is the only person that shares my likes." LOL LOL. Again its all for fun.


I do have another couple lined up and will display them in the days to come. In the meantime I should say that I chose movies because they are something virtually everyone watches. If this continues I may gear towrds other subjects. I'm going to randomly message people privately from time to time to see if I can get more people involved, thing is now that I've introduced this idea it may or may not take off pending on what transpires. Know this though, if others gain an interest I'll NEVER tell them who I'm compariong them too until the day of the posting. Oh yeah, by all means, if you don't want to wait for my personal message feel free to message me in private ......but don't post publically, it defeats the whole purpose of Ice Breakers.

What is a mashup? A mashup or blend (also mesh, mash up, mash-up and bastard pop/rock) is a song or composition created by blending two or more pre-recorded songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the instrumental track of another. To the extent that such works are 'transformative' of original content, they may find protection from copyright claims under the "fair use" doctrine of copyright law. - cited by wikipedia.

I define it simply as playing one song over another with similar rhythms. Although the history of mashups is debated I didn't really get introduced to this style of music since the early part of the millenium. Back then though the mashups of that time were no way like whats released now. It was more experimenting then. Not so much worry on making something coherent but as it with most things an evolution occurs. Heightened technology and commercialism have now made it so that mashup songs today are fluent, formatted, without awkward breaks and sound like a well formatted piece. believe me .....years ago it was not like that. Anyways, this mashup I've presented is one of my personal favorites. Something that the new gen would like and perhaps the older gen may appreciate. You wouldn't think 2 different genres could work so well together. The again it makes total sense with the beats....count 1, 2 ,3, 4 ...a perfect match.



Movie: The Abyss An underwater investigation tests the crew of a sub to the limit upon their alien discovery and in wanting to know the truth. The Abyss used CGI while it was still in its early stages and it doesn't look lame at all. The creators knew what they were using and made sure to push the CGI to the limits back then. The main issue though is all about composure. How far would you sink into the depths of the dark and the cold? Would you sacrifice losing the one you love? Do you succumb to paranoia? Thats what the crew asks of itself when they want to learn why those extra terrestrials came to earth and more specifically why the decided to settle so deep beneath the water. Though it didnt make much when it first came out it slowly over the years became a cult favorite.

Increasingly Canada is a bastion of conservatism in the world. The reasons are complicated. My sense has always been that people get conservative when they get nervous. When people get that nervouseness the human tendency is to clamp down, You see it today with the reaction towards t girls . People are saying "Whoa! Wait a second. I don't know if I like that." When you hear people say. "Oh those misguided souls." or they say " That typical behavior of people from Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver " and so on and so forth a big part of what they are really reacting to is the sense of the culture being out of control in a way. That there are things that they are not comfortable with and they don't know what to do about it and they want it to stop.
