  • Transsexuals BANNED from Airline Travel in CANADA.

    Afternoon everyone,

As someone quite active with Transsexual rights, I bring this to your attention and ask for your help. Yesterday, new sections were added to the Identity Screening Regulations. This most disturbing section is the following:

5.2 (1) An air carrier shall not transport a passenger if …
    (c) the passenger does not appear to be of the gender indicated on the identification he or she presents;

This is not only alarming but discrimination. So, I ask you the members of this forum, to please help my sisters and myself get back on the plane. Any girls that had travel plans I recommend verifying your travel plans as you will not be allowed to board a plane if your ID says male. If your ID says female and your are pre-op, be prepared to explain fraud.

    What You Can Do:
It's a sad day for transsexuals everywhere in Canada.

Lisa....this is one of those times I wish you were right...but....

Although this obviously discriminatory smear of regulation did not come to significant public attention until very recently, it apparently came into effect on July 27th, 2011.It is important to note that these regulations are not actually a piece of legislation, which would have had to pass through readings and votes in the House and Senate (which is probably why it went unnoticed until now). Rather, the Identity Screening Regulations are a set of rules implemented unilaterally by the Ministry of Transportation, as part of Canada’s so-calledPassenger Protect, which is essentially the Canadian Federal Government’s equivalent to the U.S.’s “no-fly” list.

As you know I rarely would say something that is not true or completely checked....my source

This just royally messed up my world and plans....

        I dunno..

I go everywhere as a girl an just updated my passport photo so it matches my dl. I travel lots and never have any issues at airports.. and I fly international too..

Canada customs always is very nice when I come back..

Also never had any issues in Mexico..

I highly doubt that they will ever enforce it if it is even in law. I think it's a guideline more than anything..

If they try to enforce it I'm sure there's gonna be issues for them..

Besides.. I'm sure if I match my pasport and dl photos its all good..

        Stupid ruling for sure..

The article you reference seems biased too..

Look, I am all in favour of rights for Transsexuals.
However I do not see this as a serious issue.

However if someone's appearance does not match their ID, this is a security risk.
It is possible the person on the ID is not the same person.
I personally do not want to die on a plane because someone dresses like a woman to commit terrorism.

There is only 2 official Sexes, Male and Female.
If you are a true transsexual, there is ways to change the sex on your ID.
However for official purposes, if you are male you should match the picture and gender on your Identification.
Also if you travel to other countries with ID that doesn't match your Gender, you are crazy and could find yourself in lots of trouble.

I know many TS that don't wear make up and tie their hair into a pony tail or something to match their ID.
They have had trouble in this regard and think it is just safer and faster to follow regulations.
You can still appear fem, while safisfying officials.
There is really no reason you have to be all "dolled" up for a plane ride.

The other thing is that this is not a Customs issue, it is an airline issue.

If you are a diagnosed Transsexual then this isn't and issue, otherwise you have no rights as a transsexual under the law.

I think passenger safety is far more important than one persons need to dress as the opposite sex.

So then is it ok for passengers to wear any type of costume?
              When does it stop?

Yes but many siblings would look identical if they dressed as the other sex.
So is it ok that my brother could sneak on to a plane dressed like my sister?

                  There has to be limits.
You are putting to much pressure on the individual to decide who you are.
You know who you are, but it can be very foreign and unknown to most of the population.

I will also add that I think the way ID in Canada gets issued may change over time.

When I went with my TS girlfriend in Thailand to get her passport they actually take the passport photo at the office.
They also told women to wear no jewelry, makeup and also made them put on a white jacket to cover their clothing.
Women with long hair have to put it back to look more androgenous.
They were also instructed to appear like this at all checkpoints and official situations to match their passport.
Men wore the same jacket as women.
So in the end the pictures looked just like the real person.
Thailand leads the world in Transsexualism and no one can change their sex on official ID in Thailand.

In our society Transsexualism is such a tiny slice of the population, it is barely negligible compared to other groups.
There is enough red tape in this country without trying to work this into all services.
Once in a while the .01% has to give in to some things the 99.99% does.

                        Sure it washes.
To me it is NOT ok that this could happen.

I think people are reaching to think this is a valid TS issue for the tiny amount of times it is a problem.
If you get your ID with an andogenous picture and appear this way at the checkpoint, there will never be an issue.
The only time it will be an issue is if you want to make it one, and that is a fact.

If you cannot guarantee the identity of someone, there is a security risk.
A guy recently wore an old man suit and snuck on to an Air Canada flight from Hong Kong.

Hopefully ID will soon be replaced with retina and/or finger print scans.

i agree but i honestly believe it would be rare for a tgirl whose photos on her ID match her appearance will not be allowed on a flight because it says M,it may happen once in a blue moon and if it does they have to seek legal recourse, but i would say it would be very rare here in canada...another prob is when some girls get discriminated against they dont do nothing about it,i have known a few that were refused washrooms at places and complain to friends but do not do nothing about it,that is a disgrace ,i took on manulife financial few years back ,which is a billion dollar company for discrimination and won,if you dont do nothing the problem persists......on a side note,no i didnt get rich but at least it showed the company discrimination will not be tolerated and maybe it will help someone else out down the road.

That is what I am saying, it rarely happens and it is 100% avoidable.
That is why I totally dismiss it as an issue for TS to worry about.
I don't agree that anyone could even sue over this.
What about everyone else's human rights?

I have travelled with dozens of TS and never had too much problem.

The only time I had an issue was when the Tgirl was overly made up and over dressed.
Then she got detained because there was an question of her identity because her id said M.
I totally agreed with the situation and she did too, admitting she should have dressed down.
