But it gets better. The United States is the most armed nation in the World. 88.8 (2007) of the RESIDENTS are armed. That is more than 30% more than Serbia, Yemen, Switzerland, Cyprus, Saudia Arabia and Iraq who are the next most armed nations. Let's see....

    • Iraq: Operation Desert Fox 1998, Iraqi Shia uprising (2nd Sadr uprising) 1999, Iraq War 2003-2011, (post U.S. withdrawal) 2011
    • Yemen: 1994 civil war in Yemen, Insurgency in Yemen 2004, South Yemen insurgency 2009, Sa'dah insurgency 2004-2010
    • Saudi Arabia: Gulf War 1990-1991, Insurgency in Saudi Arabia 1995, Sa'dah insurgency 2004-2010,
    • Cyprus: Turkey invaded this country in 1974 without UN approval: it's been a mess since. The country is divided with the "green" line being patrolled by the UN.
    • Serbia: Kosovo War 1945-1986 & 1998-1999, Croatian War of Independence 1991?1995, Bosnian War 1992-1995,

This leads me to believe two things.

    1. It's apparent that it must be more dangerous to live in the US than in these countries.
    2. The Swiss are a PRIME example of responsible gun ownership, something that lacks in the US.

All I see is an irresponsible government. I keep tuning into these press conferences and hearing "It's about the families" or "Our thoughts and hearts go out to the families." BULLSHIT! A government that cared would ban firearms. The United States people have proven that they cannot handle that responsibility. Protect your people...that is what governments are suppose to do. Take away that right. I have heard so much propaganda coming from people protecting the 2nd Amendment. Just remember one thing....he who lives by the sword, dies by the sword.

    Fear Breeds Hate.
I'm not sure coward is the apt word. More deep mental illness and easy access to guns. (The NRA are even opposed to trigger locks. Why?)
Governments, like corporations, are amoral institutions. They don't care about right or wrong.
Change comes from people mobilizing and taking to the streets. Politicians respond to the winds of change, as it were.
As the late historian Howard Zinn pointed out: Government is not our friend. Government was and is set up to serve corporate power. And, again, change happens when people demand it.
This'll happen with guns. I'm not opposed to gun ownership. But I strongly believe in regulation and public health care (I think Americans desperately need a public health care system) and, too, we could cut military spending by, say, 10 percent and put that $100 billion -- yep! billion with a b -- into mental health.
I mean, we've so many problems. But, again, I have faith in people. People organizing. And people demanding change.
It happened in the 30s. When people pushed Roosevelt....
It happened in the 60s. When people, well, civilized our society.

The second amendment needs to be trashed in its entirety and rewritten!

I believe that Mike's postion was reasonable and I believe that that interpretation was the original intent of the founding fathers. After first seeing Mike72's post I went to Wikipedia for more info on this contentious peice of legislation and have just finished reading and recommend this to any who want to know what this law is all about:-

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_...s_Constitution

Read it and weep! My belief is that no one south of the border, whether it be an individual, a court of law or the federal government can properly ascribe a definitive meaning to this much amended amendment. An intial error by a clerk in transcribing an early version dropped a semicolon and instead inserted a comma thus changing the meaning of the "right to bear arms" and ever since there have been countless attempts to decipher what was meant. In some of the almost 200 notes attached to the article some of the attempts at clarification are outlined.

The accepted meaning of the 2nd amendment changes almost daily in multiple venues all across the country!

          What a screw-up!

There will be no end to this debate in the lifetime of any of us here today.

            NRA Response

            http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-20817967

The influential National Rifle Association (NRA) has spoken out against the media for demonising lawful gun owners, and for suggesting a ban on certain types of weapon would be affective.
The organisation had remained largely silent in the aftermath of the Connecticut school shooting which claimed 26 lives.
Speaking at a news conference in Washington, Wayne LaPierre, chief of the NRA, called for a national database of the mentally ill and blamed violent video games and films, saying they portrayed murder as a "way of life".
"The only guy that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," Mr Lapierre told reporters.

By their way of thinking, if a kid hits another kid with a rock...the answer is to give every kid a rock.

BUT if certain kids try to get rocks...you have to invade them...

The whole US constitution is way out of date and needs to be updated to reflect the modern world. The 2nd amendment was put in originally so that US citizens could defend their land against British invasion. Last time I checked, Britain & Canada are allies of the USA and have been for many decades now.

BTW sorry for kicking your butts when Canada & Britain burned the White House & Washington DC to a crisp in the war of 1812 ... but you guys asked it!! lol

Y'know, if it was just stupidity I could ALMOST forgive it - but it's not - it's blatant, naked self-interest: the NRA is a front for the gun manufacturers, so the idea of giving everyone an M-16/M-4/AR-15 makes total sense: More guns = more sales. A woman who lives in Newtown had the most appropriate quote I have seen on this whole issue: 'America loves her guns more than her children'.

Absolutely - the wording is vague enough to allow for pretty much any interpretation you want. In fact, as I understand it, the well-regulated militia DOES exist - it's the National Guard of each state. The Guard has come to function in the last 20 or so years as an adjunct to the regular US Army - providing a pool of trained personnel to support combat activities. However, they can only be sent into combat upon the passage of a 'Federalizing' Act of Congress - this puts them into the Army's chain of command. In normal times, they are NOT part of the regular Army, and in fact their commander is the Governor of the State, NOT a federal authority. Thus, each state has, on paper at least, the means to resist tyranny/oppression/yadda, yadda, yadda from the evil Feds in DC. So....no need for assault weapons in the hands of the citizens (who are anything but well-regulated......).

Of course, I doubt the NRA would agree with my interpretation.....
