It's difficult for anyone to own up to and acknowledge that they have an addiction problem and more so in a public position.
Now that Rob Ford has taken that step and checked into rehab and taken a leave of absence from his position hopefully he
will get the help he needs. And if he returns to his political career he will be a healthier and more well balanced person.
Seeing his failings aside he was able to do a fairly good job as Mayor so I would assume he could be outstanding as a sober
person. But then again some of his drive may have come from his "limitless" self-meds (reference to Bradley Cooper movie)

Rob Ford still has support and this is why the race will be a close one. His competition in the mayoral race:

Olivia Chow - As left leaning as you can get. A career politician. From 1985-1990 she and her husband Jack Layton, both politicians, lived together in public housing while pulling in a combined 120K in salaries. She has never worked a real job in her life, and by that I mean nothing outside of being a politician. She doesn't know what it's like to work a job in which you have no security, get shit on by your boss etc. and being an NDP'er she loves to spend money, something the people of this city had had enough of. Wasting money.

Karen Stintz - Has changed her mind more times than she has ideas. Wants to sell off Toronto Hydro to pay for subway lines. She's a little more right than left. As soon as a politician says they want to sell off something that makes money for the city it makes her look stupid and that she has no good or fresh ideas. She attractive though, I like her look LOL.

Sarah Thompson - Wants to bring in tolls for the two major highways that run in the downtown core, the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardner Expressway to pay for a new downtown subway line. People see tolls and they think they are getting gouged on taxes, something this city believes it's already paying enough of. It also doesn't help that it looks like she hasn't washed her hair in 10 years.

John Tory - Considered to be somewhere in the middle, but more right than anything. But the guy has never won an election in his life. His two claims to fame: being a radio host and being the top guy at Rogers. Being the top guy at Rogers, a huge corporation which is most well known for nickel and diming their customers, terrible customer service and a billing department that can never get it right. Polls say people always want him to run and they would vote for him, but when he enters an election and starts talking people are hesitant to vote for him and for good reason. He's a corporate guy who rubs shoulders with other corporate guys, not something this city likes to see. He's rich and a bit snobbish.

Rob Ford - We all know about his crack smoking, hanging out with whores, drinking and shady friends etc. This guy is bad for the city when it comes to optics. We really don't need or want a mayor who's known for smoking crack. It's not good, matter of fact, it's pretty fuckin' bad. He's an embarrassment to the city. I will say this however, he still has support and I'll tell you why. He saves money and isn't a spender. Example: He spent $0 of his office budget and he does this every year. He managed to get councillors budgets down from $50K to $30k, he spends none of it. The rest of them spend at least half or all of it, two of them went way over it.

Another example: Maple Leafs Sports Entertainment (MLSE) Yes, that MLSE that owns the Leafs, Raptors, Marlies, Argos and Toronto FC, one of the richest sports conglomerates in North America want a $10 million loan to expand BMO Field (where Toronto FC play their soccer games). They want to expand the stands so that the Argos can play their instead of the Skydome. They want a $10 million loan that they will pay back over a 30 year time period. You're talking about a company that pays some of their players $5-10 million a year to play hockey and they can't come up with $10 million to expand a stadium they built and own? every councillor voted for giving them the loan, every single one...except for two. You guessed it, Rob and Doug Ford voted against it. This is the type of thing that these guys live off of. They show they can, will and do save taxpayers money. They are frugal. When people see the other councillors maxing out their expense accounts, voting to give million dollar loans to big corporations that don't need it you see now why these guys still have support, regardless of their personal lives and embarrassing screw ups.

This is why it'll be a close race. It's not so much what Rob Ford does, it's what the other candidates do. The average citizen of this city struggles to make ends meet and see city council doesn't respect the money they get every year to run the city. The Ford's make it a point to do the opposite and it goes a long way for them. How else can you explain Ford still being able to be competitive in a mayoral race, it's mind boggling. But when you really look at how things go down at city hall you understand how this guy seems to still have 9 lives.

This is why it will be a close race.

I for one won't be voting for Rob Ford for obvious reasons but I can tell you this: I'm having a very hard time finding someone worthwhile voting for.

I have to point out a couple of errors: Olivia Chow and Jack Layton didn't live in "government housing", they lived in a co-op with some units priced to income. Theirs however, was priced at market rate. Just because she has worked in politics for the majority of her adult life shouldn't preclude her from continuing to do so. We've seen what electing a supposed "businessman" has done to our reputation and infrastructure. Also, MLSE does not own the stadium, it is owned by the city. The deal put forward by MLSE would save the city up to 50 million in the short term and much more in the long term as the company is offering to take over all maintenance of the the stadium for decades. The 10 million would be an investment, not a give-away. The Fords merely voted against it because they thought they could once again make it seem like they're protecting the city, when in fact the rejection of the deal would end up costing their precious taxpayers more money. Conservative talking points are inaccurate at best, and outright lies at worst. Their approach tends to appeal to the lowest common denominator: envy, bitterness and greed.

I feel for Rob Ford.

I think the man has been doing a pretty good job as mayor.
And many people feel the same way with good reason.

If this witch hunt hadn't have started, no one would be the wiser about how the man lives his PRIVATE, off duty life.

I do not agree with the crack smoking being okay because i know how screwed up crack "addicts" can be and how it affects their better judgment.
Several of my friends from my teen years are now crack addicts and have been for many years. One of which has stolen expensive watches from me, has borrowed money from me and never paid it back (instead he asked for more and more and promises to pay it back next Thursday), he has stolen other small things from my apartment, has intentionally broken tools of mine when i had loaned them to him, and then he accused me of lying about him breaking them.
When he was starving, i fed him. I paid for his Quebec medicare card to be renewed so that he would, at least, have identification in case he got stopped by the police.
I did so many favors for him just because we've been friends for many years (we were best teen friends, long ago).

He still owes me money.
He called me up about a year and a half ago to inform ME how selfish and self absorbed I AM lol. My gosh! I simply told him that i needed to hang up the phone.
And he acted as if i were ashamed of myself and had told me, "Yea, you should hang up!"

He hasn't called back, since.
He's probably walking around convincing himself how pissed off he should feel about how i've done him wrong. Wow! That's how a real cracked filled brain operates.

I doubt Rob Ford is like that. But who knows?...maybe Mr Ford is just beginning on his way down to that level. And if so, he needs help, quickly.
A real crack addict is by no means overweight. Rob Ford is pretty obese.
Maybe Ford has just recently started using crack (within the passed few years or less) and it's a good thing he was caught so that the whole city and the world can intervene and make him really consider his political position and his future.

If he is still smoking crack in light of all the negative attention, i will have to say he is definitely a crack addict BUT a new one - meaning MAYBE he has not yet crossed the point of no return.

I think the press should be trying to help him recover from his addictions with love and compassion, not constantly hounding him, like this, because the nasty media only feeds the public opinion.
Drugs are an escape, and constant hate might only cause him to sink deeper.
He may act confident in public, but many of us should know that he has to keep up a brave face to make it all look like they're wrong and he is right.
I dunno, folks, from what i've been seeing on the news, i'm starting to think they're right and he is a crack addict.
It's really too bad for the guy.
I hate to see people fall like this.

I cried hard when Amy Winehouse died. I saw photos of her when she first started and she was frikken gorgeous and so sexy and so VERY talented. She had such a bright star shining on her. And then, she quickly transformed into the laughing stock she became towards the end, and the public encouraged her rebellious side and she just sank deeper and deeper until she was lowered into her grave.

We can't be such hateful people to wish for the worst for a man like Robert Ford, can we?
He's not a rapist, pedo, or a murderer (i assume), i am sure it would be found out, by now, if he were.

I look at him, his face, and i see and feel his internal pains and sufferings, in his eyes. I can see behind his eyes. It's pretty clear.
I see a great man falling apart and still trying to hang on while media people kick at his hands that grasp onto the ledge of the steep cliff.

If this man, Rob Ford, who unfortunately got addicted to such a drug as crack, should die of some self inflicted death because he was hounded and shamed to death, i will cry and feel so lost - and not because he was a great mayor or whatever, but only because he suffered and tried to be brave in a hateful, uncaring world.

Humans can act like trash, and shockingly, feel so proud of it.

I have very little compassion for Rob Ford. He has brought all of this upon himself. He has demonstrated himself to be a narcissistic, racist, bigoted, hypocritical, two-faced leader. He is under no more scrutiny than anybody who has come before him. David Miller and Mel Lastman were attacked the same way Ford has been, and many who preach compassion for Ford wanted to kick those 2 guys out of office. When you are the mayor of the largest city in Canada, your personal life is no longer fully your own. Any politician should know this. If they don't, then they are asleep at the wheel and ignorant of what to expect.

Rob's antics, by anybody else on the city of Toronto's payroll, would have resulted in termination a long time ago. Ford has violated the conflict of interest policy, human rights policies, employee conduct expectations, among so many other things. How the top city employee could get away with this behavior is appalling.

On day 1 of the crack scandal Ford could have come clean. He could have said, "yes I smoked crack. It was a mistake than I am sincerely sorry for. I have learned from it. Let's move on and do the right thing for the city". Much worse has been forgiven of much more high profile and important people than Ford. This would have been readily accepted because this was pre his apology of the week that his antics turned into.

His brother Doug's crocodile tears last week were laughable. Doug is the only person who has been more arrogant and pigheaded than Rob has. Doug has selfishly pushed Ford through all this because of his own petty agenda, which is simply to stay relevant. He knows that when Rob fades away, Doug becomes irrelevant. This was evidenced no more clearly than the other day when Doug sat in Rob's mayoral chair and put his name over top of his brother's to read "Doug Ford, Mayor".

The man has addiction issues, such is life sometimes. We all have our issues. But we don't get to sabotage how many others because of our own issues. Ford has made our city a laughing stock in the eyes of so many. I've spoken to people who have actually lost business because people no longer want to come to Toronto because they think we are all like Ford. After all, we voted in a bigoted snob, with multiple addiction issues that are affecting his professional performance, because he said he'd save us a couple bucks on our taxes. Says a lot about Toronto, doesn't it?

They are human, but not above the law and therefore will and should pay for their shortcomings, just like anybody else.
